Obituary
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Sherley Edgar Sanford on September 27, 2022, of North Kingston NS. He will be missed by many friends and family members, who loved him and benefited from his generous spirit.
Sherley Edgar Sanford was born on October 4, 1935, to Aubrey James Sanford and Ida Blanche Sanford (Berry) in Middleton, Nova Scotia, and grew up in Torbrook. He started work at the age of fourteen delivering milk before even earning a driver’s license. He travelled to remote areas of Northern Quebec and Saskatchewan as a heavy equipment mechanic. In 1963, he married his beautiful wife, Kay (nee Kathleen Keddy), and in the same year supervised the installation of the diesel engine on the historic Bluenose II.
He worked for Nova Scotia Tractors and Blackwood Hodge before he and Kay settled in Moncton, New Brunswick in 1970. He installed refrigeration units in the first Dairy Queen in Riverview, NB and was so dedicated to his work, he would go out many evenings to service these units. We learned later that these “service calls” came with free ice cream and Kay discovered him on many occasions with a double-scoop cone when he should have been somewhere else. As it turned out, there wasn’t anything Sherley couldn’t fix or build from scratch. We are so thankful that many friends and family now own small pieces of furniture he made just for them. He lives on through these pieces.
Sherley also loved spending time in the woods, bird watching and endlessly chasing away the squirrels that dared to steal birdseed. He taught his children the value of a strong work ethic. He was incredibly proud of his kids and enjoyed spending time with them. He loved dancing to his favourite country music with his wife in the living room of their home.
In all respects, Sherley was a good man.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers Freeman Sanford (Olive), Ralph Sanford (Erdeena), and Raymond Sanford (Elaine); his sister Jean Webster, and his brothers-in-law Mike Keddy (Debbie), Raymond Keddy (Diane), Russell Keddy, Jack Keddy (Karen), David Hall (Norma), and his sister-in law Janet Keddy (Ted).
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife Kay and his three children, Richard (Lulu), Christine (Rennie Gadsby) and Douglas Sanford. Much loved by his brother Wayne (Celeste) of Kentville, NS and his nephew Roger (Debbie) Sanford of New Glasgow. He will be missed by his sisters-in-law Norma Hall (David), Karen Keddy (Jack), Elaine Sanford (Raymond) and Debbie Keddy (Mike). He will be remembered fondly by his brothers-in-law Ted Keddy (Janet) and Murray Keddy (Loraine), as well as many nieces and nephews.
There will be no service at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Canadian Heart and Stroke or a local charity of your choosing. The online guestbook may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
