Sheila Barshay Goldbloom, C.M., C.Q.
November 30, 1925 – July 3, 2022
Sheila Goldbloom died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, after a long and exemplary life filled with love and purpose. She was ninety-six years old.
She titled her autobiography “Opening Doors”, which encapsulated her life-long determination to create opportunities for herself and the many people — particularly women — she mentored and counselled throughout her life.
Sheila was born in Brooklyn to idealistic parents who had immigrated to the United States as children. Her mother, Esther Reich, was a feminist before the term was popularized and her father, Jacob Barshay, was a highly regarded attorney. Sheila’s childhood was profoundly marked by her father’s death from a heart attack when she was only ten years old. Her mother subsequently married Nathan Rothstein who was Sheila’s much-loved second father. Her parents prized education and launched her on an educational journey, which included a liberal arts degree from Mount Holyoke College. Sheila returned to her studies when her children were young, earning a Master’s in Social Work from McGill and eventually serving on the faculty of the School of Social Work for twenty-eight years. Sheila met Victor when she was working for the League of Women Voters, and he was a resident in pediatrics at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. They settled in Montreal, where they raised three children and both pursued lives of public engagement and enduring positive impact. Throughout their sixty-seven-year marriage they supported each other in raising their family, in community engagement, and in their diverse and demanding professional lives.
Sheila provided leadership for many organizations including Red Feather, Centraide du Grand Montréal, La Fondation du Grand Montréal, the Positive Action Committee, Selwyn House School, Trafalgar School for Girls, Vanier College, the McGill Middle East Program in Civil Society and Peace Building, Friends of the McGill Library, Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, the Baron de Hirsch Institute/Jewish Family Services, Weredale House (now part of Batshaw Youth and Family Services), Meals on Wheels, l’Abri en Ville and the Queen Elizabeth Health Complex. In 2007, at the age of eighty-two, she co-chaired a Quebec-wide commission, which made recommendations about how to improve the conditions for senior citizens in the province. Sheila’s myriad contributions were recognized by the Order of Canada and the Ordre National du Québec. She received honorary doctorates from Mount Holyoke College and McGill University. The Quebec Community Groups Network’s annual Community Service Award is named in her and Victor’s honour.
Sheila is survived by her children, Susan (Peter Restler), Michael (Fiona Macleod), and Jonathan (Alice Switocz), her grandchildren, Victoria (Byron Alex) and Lincoln Restler (Anna Poe-Kest), Alexandra and Matthew Goldbloom, her great-grandchildren, Sol and Sylvia Restler-Alex, and her sister Deanne Marein-Efron (Samuel Marein-Efron).
As with the many people whose lives she touched, we are immeasurably grateful for the love, encouragement, and guidance she gave us and the example she set. She has been and will always be our most profound inspiration.
We would like to express our deep gratitude to Lita Abubo, Cecile Gordon and Mayra Rodas for their love and care for Sheila over the last years of her life and to the staff of the Port Royal for their unfailing kindness and support. Sheila dedicated herself to helping others. Volunteering your time or making a financial contribution to a community organization would be a fitting way to honour her life.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 8 at 10:00 a.m., at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, 4100 Sherbrooke St. W. The family will be available to receive condolences as of 9:00 a.m. and following the service until 11:30 a.m. A private family burial will follow the service.

Sheila Goldbloom est décédée paisiblement chez elle, entourée de sa famille, après une longue vie exemplaire remplie d’amour et d’engagement. Elle était âgée de 96 ans.
Elle a intitulé son autobiographie « Opening Doors », qui résume sa détermination de toujours créer des opportunités pour elle-même et pour les nombreuses personnes — en particulier les femmes — qu’elle a encadrées et conseillées tout au long de sa vie.
Sheila est née à Brooklyn de parents idéalistes qui avaient immigré aux États-Unis lorsqu’ils étaient enfants. Sa mère, Esther Reich, était une féministe avant que le terme ne soit popularisé et son père, Jacob Barshay, était un avocat très réputé. L’enfance de Sheila a été profondément marquée par la mort de son père d’une crise cardiaque alors qu’elle n’avait que dix ans. Sa mère a épousé par la suite Nathan Rothstein, le deuxième père tant aimé de Sheila. Ses parents accordaient une grande importance à l’éducation et l’ont lancée dans un parcours éducatif qui comprenait un diplôme d’arts libéraux du Mount Holyoke College. Elle a repris ses études lorsque ses enfants étaient jeunes et a obtenu une maîtrise en travail social à McGill, où elle a été membre du corps enseignant de l’École de travail social pendant 28 ans. Sheila a rencontré Victor alors qu’elle travaillait pour la League of Women Voters et qu’il était résident en pédiatrie à l’hôpital Columbia Presbyterian de New York. Ils se sont installés à Montréal où ils ont élevé trois enfants et ont tous deux mené une vie d’engagement public et d’impact positif. Tout au long de leurs 67 ans de mariage, ils se sont soutenus mutuellement en élevant leur famille, dans leurs engagements communautaires et dans leurs vies professionnelles diverses et exigeantes.
Sheila a assuré le leadership de nombreux organismes, dont Red Feather, Centraide du Grand Montréal, la Fondation du Grand Montréal, le Positive Action Committee, l’école Selwyn House, l’école secondaire Trafalgar pour filles, le collège Vanier, le Programme de McGill en société civil et en rétablissement de la paix au Moyen-Orient, Friends of the McGill Library, Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, Services d’Aide à la Famille Juive de l’Institut Baron de Hirsch, Weredale House (qui fait maintenant partie des Services à la jeunesse et à la famille Batshaw), la Popote Roulante, l’Abri en Ville et le Complexe de santé Reine Élizabeth. En 2007, à l’âge de 82 ans, elle a coprésidé une commission panquébécoise qui a formulé des recommandations sur la façon d’améliorer les conditions des personnes âgées dans la province. Les innombrables contributions de Sheila ont été reconnues par l’Ordre du Canada et l’Ordre national du Québec. Elle a reçu des doctorats honorifiques du Mount Holyoke College et de l’Université McGill. Le prix annuel du service communautaire du Quebec Community Groups Network est nommé en son honneur et celui de Victor.

Comme pour les nombreuses personnes dont elle a enrichi la vie, nous lui sommes infiniment reconnaissants pour l’amour, les encouragements et les conseils qu’elle nous a fournis et pour l’exemple qu’elle nous a donné. Elle a été et sera toujours une grande inspiration pour nous.
Nous tenons à exprimer notre profonde gratitude à Lita Abubo, Cecile Gordon et Mayra Rodas pour l’amour et les soins qu’elles ont prodigués à Sheila au cours des dernières années de sa vie, ainsi qu’au personnel du Port Royal pour leur gentillesse et leur soutien indéfectibles. Nous aimerions également exprimer notre appréciation à Annick St-Jean qui a accompagné Sheila et sa famille avec sagesse et compassion durant ses derniers jours.
Sheila s’est consacrée à aider les autres. Donner de son temps ou faire une contribution financière à un organisme communautaire serait une façon appropriée d’honorer sa vie.
Un service funéraire aura lieu le vendredi 8 juillet à 10h chez : Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, 4100, rue Sherbrooke Ouest. La famille y recevra les condoléances à partir de 9h et après le service jusqu’au 11h30. Un enterrement dans l’intimité familiale suivra.
