Obituary
Sebastian passed away peacefully at the High River General Hospital with family present on January 31, 2022.
Sebastian is the oldest in their family who lived on a farm in Ziertheim by ‘Dillingen an der Donau’, Germany. His mother, Josepha, was pregnant with her 8th child when his Dad, Xaver, passed away at the age of 43 due to pneumonia. In 1939 the family’s hired farmhands were drafted into WW2. This necessitated that Sebastian, at the age of 12 took on the responsibility of running the day-to-day operations of the family farm. Three years later he was drafted to pre-military training and served his time as a foot soldier in the German army at the Western Front. Sebastian was captured by the Americans and put in a POW camp in France. He was released to arrive back home to his family in Ziertheim on May 8, 1945.
After the war Sebastian attended an Agricultural College while helping his brother who had taken on running the farm. Following his studies Sebastian managed a neighbourhood farm as well as a local brewery.
In 1951 Sebastian arrived in Canada as a young and single immigrant. He ended up in Vulcan, Alberta where he was hired as a farmhand on his Uncle’s farm. Sebastian started leasing land to grow his own crops. This initiative expanded into an operation that grew to around 6000 acres on the Kainai Nation, otherwise known as the Blood Tribe, in southern Alberta. The exposure to chemicals and pesticides effected his immune system and forced him to change his career. He obtained his security and real estate license in 1971 and sold his lease agreement to his associate of the farming operation.
Sebastian married his lovely wife, Viola, in 1970 and they moved into their newly built home in High River. He sold real estate, acquired rental properties, and ended up working for the Department of Transportation until his retirement.
Sebastian was very much involved in the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and was a long-time member of the building and maintenance committee. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus where he held the position as the Grand Knight.
Sebastian will be remembered by many. He was tenacious and known to be a hard worker, a good listener, and a person who took interest in what others had to say. He loved a good card game, hosting guests at he and Viola’s dinner invites, and networking at the various coffee shops. He was also known to be penny-wise, and in his lifetime, he has shown many the road leading to financial success.
He is predeceased by his wife, Viola, his parents Xaver and Josefa Aninger, his sisters Theresia and Kathi, and his brother Josef.
He is survived by his brother Xaver, his sisters Paula, Maria, and Elisabeth Klemens-Aninger, as well as Elisabeth’s husband, George, and their children, Michael, Klaus, Marcus, and Heide-Marie. He is also survived by nephews and nieces, Ralph and Linda Medernach, Bonnie and Don Smity, Randy and Laura Hauer and, as well as Grace and Dick McKean.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 12th, at 11:00 at St Francis de Sales Catholic Church in High River, Alberta.
Sebastian wishes to thank Dr. Jensen, the staff at High River General Hospital, the staff at Sunrise Village in High River, Father Phillip Van Tinh Le, Father Mariusz Sztuk, and, in particular, Linda Medernach, Luella, and Maj Wojcik for attending his daily needs.
In lieu of flowers, Catholic masses for Mission Churches or donation to St. Francis de Sales Church are requested.
