Sarah Pauline Lyons Wednesday September 7th 2022

Lyons, Sarah Pauline 13 January 2005 – 7 September 2022
Seventeen years can seem so brief, but it was a lifetime. We are heartbroken to announce the death of our beautiful, sweet Sarah, 17 years old, born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
Those who knew her knew a quiet, caring, loving, talented, intelligent, athletic, kind, but silently struggling sweetheart. She loved music, and her artistic and artisan talents will long be cherished by her family, whose frequent requests of Sarah for Christmas and birthday gifts have constructed a miniature art gallery in their homes. Sarah’s sewing skills led her pampered (but somewhat confused) dog to become a canine fashionista.
Ahhh, talents abounded. Sarah enjoyed baking fancy cakes and cookies to brighten the day of others, including hospital staff. She raised money for her participation in 100 Women of Yarmouth County Who Care, via her Yarmouth Charity Cookies endeavour. She had a true gift for Mad Gabs, frequently taking the game-winning title in seconds. She was an accomplished musician, playing ukulele, guitar, mandolin, French horn, flute, piano (achieving Royal Conservatory Grade 8), and keyboards. She was a performance and vocalist member of Up & Coming, Sound Affects, and Rewind. She was a master April Fooler and one particular year, her “sponge cake” prank was recycled between friends.
Sarah was an athlete, at various times competing in soccer, softball, cross country running, track and field, and basketball. Sarah enjoyed the outdoors, including remote backcountry canoe trips with her family at Keji, despite being less than enthusiastic about paddling constructively. In her younger years, she participated in Scouts Canada and Girl Guides Canada, where she learned how to give her brothers a run for their money at fire-starting.
She was lovingly referred to as “Ribs” by the family, a name that originated from having two older brothers that affectionately took it upon themselves to poke them whenever unprotected. Eventually, she learned to defiantly mount her own ambushes by striking back at the most unsuspecting times, bringing many fond, laughing memories in otherwise bland evenings. Her love of her family was deep and true.
Her love of her Barn Families, horses, and riding brought her what peace she could find in her final time with us. We will be forever grateful to Sarah’s equestrian families who gave her this wonderful outlet and respite.
Sarah was considering social work as a career path, as she felt a strong need to help others in distress.
Sarah is survived by her parents, Natalie Horton and Brian Lyons, brothers Ben Lyons (Emalie Hayes) and Christian Lyons, and grandmother Pauline Horton. She was also loved immensely by Aunt Mary Lou (Todd) Hudson (Miramichi, NB), Uncle Kevin (Terry) Horton (Green Bay, Wisconsin), Uncle Ronald Horton, cousins Christopher and Stephanie Horton (Ontario), and surrogate brother, Quinten Johnson. Sarah was predeceased by grandparents Marie and Martin Lyons (Miramichi, NB), grandfather Murray Horton, and Aunt Elizabeth George (NFLD).
Masks are requested by the family for all indoor funeral events.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation will be held Monday, September 12, 2022 from 6-8 P.M. in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral mass will take place Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at 10 A.M. from St. Ambrose Co Cathedral with Father Henry Smolenaars officiating. There will be a live stream of the service on the St. Ambrose Cathedral Website for those unable to attend. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association, or Aidean’s Place Youth Wellness Center in Yarmouth (which held a special place in Sarah’s heart).
