PARSONS SAMUEL W. (1937-2022) – Passed peacefully away in the loving arms of his adoring family at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. Leaving to mourn his loss and to celebrate the joy of having loved and been loved by such a wonderful and caring man are: his wife and life partner of 64 years Edith (Ede) nee Kelloway; his children, Gail Curran (Wilf), Adele Woodfine (Tom), Brad Parsons (Pam), Renee Sheppard (Craig); grandchildren, Deanne & Chris Murray, Shawn & Ryan Wight, Deidre Grouchy & Desiree Parsons, Samantha & Tyler Sheppard; great-grandchildren Hudson & Taylor Wight, Derek Grouchy & Savannah Wight; brothers and sister, Harold (Marie), Richard (Daphne), Louise Dillon (Gus); brother-in-law, William Kelloway; sisters-in-law, Eliza Slade, Effie Rose, Jean Smith (Walter) and a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins & friends. And let’s not forget his furry buddy ‘Charlie’. Predeceased by his parents Harold & Jenny (Forward) Parsons, and parents-in-law William & Elizabeth Kelloway; also, by Marion Kelloway, Lilian & Hal O’Connell, Ches Slade, Melvin Rose, Joan Kelloway & special niece Ceanne Butt.
Sam was born and raised in Carbonear and was extremely proud of his home town and its rich heritage. As a young lad he found his life’s calling when skipping school to “turn wrenches” at Penny’s Garage. While still a young man he met and married one of the prettiest girls from Salmon Cove and together they started their treasured family, eventually moving to St. John’s to further his career as one of the most respected mechanics and master mechanics in the industry. Sam went on to form PBS Services with his son Brad and daughter-in-law Pam, a very successful company today. Sam and Ede loved spending weekends and summers at their cabin on the Line Road in Carbonear where there were many nights of fun filled music and song. He was a great wealth of knowledge, a lover of country music and was known to belt out a few of “the oldies”. He was also a computer and gadget whiz, slightly ahead of his time.
Sam loved the open road, loved to drive, loved to travel, and made many memorable RVing trips through Canada and down through the Southern and Eastern US. However, he was always the happiest and the proudest when surround by his loving family at their many Sunday dinners and special gatherings where he was often overheard to say “just look what we’ve done together Ede, we got some good family”.
Thank you to all the medical staff who attended to Sam/Dad during our time of need. Special thanks to his family doctor Dr. Dennis O’Keefe, Dr. Michael Paul, Dr. Sean Martin; the nursing and medical staff of 4NB and the dialysis staff of 4SA.
There will be church service and a celebration of Sam’s life at the Riverside United Church in Salmon Cove (where Sam assisted his father in the construction of the church) on Saturday, April 9, 2022.
Donations in Sam’s memory can be made to the Kidney Foundation, the Riverside United Church in Salmon Cove or a charity of one’s choice.
