Ruth Mary Furrow 19322022

Ruth Mary Furrow
1932-2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved
Mother, Ruth Mary Furrow, which occurred at home on Monday, February
14, 2022, in her 90th year. Mother was born in Newburg, a daughter of
the late C. Edward and Eva M. (Lewis) Chase. She spent her younger
years in Lower Brighton, before moving to Hartin Settlement when she
was 10.
She met our father while walking back from the train. They were
married in 1949, and moved into the Furrow homestead, where she lived
ever since. Eight children were born in succession from 1950 to 1963,
but our sister Kathy Lynn died as a young child in 1962. Dad took
sick in 1970, and in January 1971 our Mother found herself a young
widow. Two years later, our sister Judy died at age 16.
Mother found the strength to endure those hardships through her faith
in God, in which she never wavered. While she was able, she was
actively involved as a member of the Marne Baptist Church, teaching
the adult Sunday School class for many years, and was a member of the
Women’s Missionary Society. Her knowledge of scripture was
immense, and she could easily tell you where to find any verse in the
Bible that you were seeking. In later years as she was less able to
leave her house, Mother still was devoted to reading her Bible and
daily devotions.
Mother was a beautiful singer, and like her father before her, sang
constantly around the house. She could remember old songs from the
war years, along with several little ditties that she learned from her
dad. She would often memorize bible verses by setting them to a tune,
and rocked a great many of her children, grandchildren, and great
grandchildren to sleep with lullabies.
As the last of us left the nest, Mother took on the job of keeping
house for our sister, Barbara, who like our Mother couldn’t stop
having babies. She was a true “Nana”, moving in during the
week, but not without her Irish Setter O’Malley, who always
enjoyed the drive back and forth. While she was working at Barb and
Bill’s, she met some good friends, and became involved in the
local TOPS chapter, becoming “Queen” one year.
Mother always enjoyed living in the country. She planted big
vegetable and flower gardens, and froze or canned vegetables,
raspberries, and fiddleheads. Her chocolate chip cookies were
legendary, and we can honestly say we never left the table hungry.
We will miss her every day for the rest of our lives, but will cherish
the love that she had for us, and the good memories that will last a
lifetime.
Mother is survived by her children, Betty Smith (Erroll) of Woodstock,
Jeannie Martin (Gary) of Nackawic, Stephen Furrow (Susan) of Marne,
Lewis Furrow (Donna) of Riceville, Barbara McKinley (Bill) of
Northampton, and Ron Furrow of Hartin Settlement; siblings Douglas
Chase (Bernice) of Ottawa, Barbara Robichaud (Ron) of Princess Park,
Fran Briggs (Lewis) of Jacksonville, Susan McIntosh (Don) of
Fredericton, and Ralph Chase (Rhona) of Hanwell; sisters-in-law Velma
Fraser of Saint John, Audrey Chase of Hanwell and Gloria Chase of
Meductic; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great
grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her
parents, Mother was predeceased by our father, Ronald C. Furrow; two
daughters, Kathy and Judy; a step-daughter Dr. Nancy Vaughan; a
granddaughter Craigon Simmons; great grandson Keifer; and siblings
Charlie, Ronald, George Chase and Norma Ross.
Visiting hours will be held at Flewelling Funeral Home, 585 Otis

from the Marne Baptist Church, 892 Upper Skiff Lake Road, Marne. Due
to government COVID regulations, masks, proof of double vaccination
and government issued ID are required. Interment will be later in the
Marne Cemetery.

Wesley Furrow, Quintin McKinley, Zachary Johnson and Brodie
Thibodeau.
