Roy was born as the fourth child of Ludwig and Elen Nelson in Washington, USA.
As a child, the family immigrated to BC and lived in Pritchard before moving north to the Sweet Water area and then again to Golata Creek.
Roy enlisted in the Canadian Army at 17 years old and spent his 18th Birthday in England. He did a variety of jobs in the army and had many tales to tell about various training exercises and sights he had seen.
After the war ended, Roy worked in Vanderhoof in a sawmill for Ed Engstrom where he met the love of his life, Ruth, whom he married in June 1949. They came back to Golata Creek area after the birth of their first child, where Roy did a variety of jobs including: driving truck, running a sawmill, and owned and operated mixed farming on a portion of the original family homestead.
Roy and Ruth purchased an RV and became snowbirds and spent their winters in Arizona and later on, Vancouver Island where they had a large circle of friends. Roy & Ruth left the farm and moved into Fort St. John where they bought a house and Roy was able to continue his love of growing with raised beds and a greenhouse.
Roy leaves behind Ruth, his wife of 72 years, Daughters: Elaine, Sharon, Carol (Garry), Bonnie, and son Gerry (Roni). He is survived by his brother Ingvar (Rita) and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Roy will be remembered for his love of fishing, trips on snowmobiles into Redfern, salmon fishing on the west coast, and hunting. He played a great game of cards with his favorites being Hand & Foot Canasta as well as Crib. He also liked Suduko and spent many an hour solving puzzles.
Roy supplied potatoes for the entire neighborhood for a good many years and in later years he supplied tomatoes and cucumbers for anyone who stopped by. He spent many hours in the greenhouse and garden.
He will be missed by many as truly one of the great men of our times.
May he rest in Peace.
