À la mémoire de
Ronald C. Smith

A devoted husband and wonderful father, Ron passed away peacefully last weekend. He will be remembered for his undeniable generosity, friendship and commitment to family. The only child of Joyce and Charles Smith, Ron grew up in Toronto, attended Weston Collegiate and later the University of Western Ontario where he graduated with a business degree from Huron College. He remained friends with his classmates and a proud alumnus for life. After brief stints at IBM and Touche Ross, Ron began a productive consulting career, highlighted by his time as the Executive Director of the Royal Commission on Electric Power Planning. He then transitioned to become the owner of a successful business distributing industrial absorbents across Canada.
Ron enjoyed travel, but time spent together with family and friends at the cottage was his passion. Ron loved to putter, moving from one cottage project to the next as the Blue Jays game played quietly on a battery powered radio in the background. He also enjoyed trips in the boat exploring the beautiful outer islands of Georgian Bay. Relentlessly optimistic, Ron was never deterred by a challenge. This served him well in business and life. He built the family’s first cottage by hand and a fibreglass boat from a kit. This trait also produced the occasional humourous result, like the time he persuaded his son’s friends to carry a hot tub up a rocky shore to the deck of the family cottage, which had neither electricity nor a working water pump. Somehow neither seemed essential.
Ron never missed a practice, game, tournament, recital, concert or competition and always found the right act or words of encouragement for his children. Ron is predeceased by his wife and best friend of 36 years, Glennys and their daughter Kendra (Brock Dunlop). He is survived by his son, Crawford (Jennifer Dent) and seven grandchildren Coleman, Tahryn, Mackenzie, Cayleigh, Finlay, Leah and Charlotte.
Donations may be made to the Georgian Bay Land Trust, a foundation dedicated to preserving the Bay.
