Today with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our Dad, Rolf in his 94th year. He is once again together with the love of his life, Christa, of 67 years. In memory and honour of our beloved parents: Lives well lived with integrity, honesty, perseverance, ingenuity and hard work. Immigration to Canada from Germany in 1952 with two toddlers offered our Dad the opportunity to live a dream of owning his own business with support of his wife/business partner. Early difficult years only made them more determined to succeed. Failure was never an option. They owned and operated Strathcona Greenhouses and Florist in Burlington and Binbrook (1958 – 2007) as well as flower market stands in Hamilton, Burlington and Waterdown for 41 years. Dad was happiest when he was in the greenhouses doing what he loved – growing beautiful flowers. He was kind and gentle and had a sense of humour.
They were world travelers and gathered friends from all over the world. They always said Canada was the best country in the world. Dad was a proud Canadian Citizen and raised a Canadian Flag every Canada Day. Parties with friends and close-knit family gatherings were always important happy events. They supported many foster children through Plan. They enjoyed skating and swimming and later in life even downhill skiing. Other pursuits included camping, hunting and fishing; later RVing all over North America. As members of the Austrian Club they enjoyed dinner/dances and singing in the choir. Leaving behind daughters: Rose (Edward) Strecker, Anne (Charles) Friedrich and Sandra (Reno Gabrielli), granddaughters: Christina (Max), Lori (Kevin), Sarah (Dave), Karen, Nancy (Paul), great-grandchildren: Patrick, Lilly, Thomas, Ella, Michael and Joseph.
Special thanks to the Doctors, Nurses, PSW’s and Social Workers for their compassionate care from CTU 3, Mary Grace 5, and Complex Care 5 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hamilton. Dad was a lifelong Lions Club member. He loved animals and was never without pets. Donations to the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides would be greatly appreciated. www.dogguides.com
