Obituary
SHAND, ROGER LARKIN, Age 86, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Dec. 17th, 2022 at the Roseway Hospital in Shelburne. Born, Sept. 17th, 1936 in Shag Harbour, he was the son of the late Elroy and Evelyn (Larkin) Shand.
He grew up in Shag Harbour and the water and all that it had to offer played a major part in his life and livelihood. As early as the age of 13, while he was still in school he was already fishing a few lobster traps from a dory and later worked part time in his grandfather, Andrew Larkin’s boatshop. At the age of 19 he set off for Ontario where he spent 3 years as a crew member on the lake freighter the S.S. Scott Misener, travelling from Port Colburne, Ontario to Duluth, Minnesota and all points in between. When he returned to Shag Harbour in 1958 he decided to settle down and start a family with his first wife, Helen Newell. Before he got his first lobster boat he spent a few years working with his brother in-law, Bennie Nickerson aboard his dragger… fishing offshore. After that he bought his own rig and started out lobstering, fishing, and even tried his hand at harvesting as well as buying Irish Moss. He was never far from the wharf in Shag Harbour and could always be seen there up until he retired 20 years ago. In his early years he was an avid sportsman/hunter and continued to hunt deer well after his retirement. He enjoyed nature and all it had to offer but his greatest joy came from his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. He was a man of mild nature and was well liked and respected by those that knew him. He was always ready with a smile and a yarn to tell regardless of the company, be it with friends at Tim Horton and McDonalds or in the company of a passing acquaintance or stranger, he always tried his best to get along with everyone. His final few months were spent at Roseway Hospital, where he had endeared himself with all the nurses and staff. The family are sincerely grateful for all that they did to make him as comfortable as possible in his remaining days.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Arlene Shand of Port Clyde, his son, Douglas (Darlene) Shand, Shag Harbour and daughter, Donna Shand, Shag Harbour. Grandchildren, Stephanie, (Cory) Jonathan (Charmaine) and Justin and great grandchildren, Austin, Amy & Drew, along with stepchildren, Andrea Nickerson (Sid) Barrington, Jeanne Shand (Steven) Bear Point, Cathy Nickerson (Brian) Pubinco and Bobby Smith, Port Clyde, as well as several step grand and great grandchildren.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Nickerson (Bennie).
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, December 22 at 2 p.m.
Family flowers only. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chapel Hill Historical Society or the Rosalin Nickerson Care Fund. Online condolences may be sent to huskilson@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guest book at www.huskilson.net
