In loving memory of Robert (Bob) McDonald, who passed away peacefully at Pioneer Long Term Care Home in Sudbury, on January 31, 2022, at the age of 92.
Bob, also known to many as Boxcar and Flatcar, was born in North Bay, ON, on January 22, 1930, the only son of “Boxcar” Wilfred (Bob) James McDonald and Vera McDonald (nee Winters), and loving brother of Beth (Harry Simpson) and Vivian (George “Bud” Enborg), all predeceased. His family moved to Capreol, ON, when he was 4 years old. He continued to live in the family home on Lakeshore Rd. (previously named River Street), eventually raising a family with his cherished wife of 61 years, Lois (nee Davidson) predeceased, until 2018, when he moved into Pioneer Manor.
Bob is survived by his son (Bob) Robert McDonald (Jackie) of Langley, BC., and daughter Shelley Bechamp of Capreol (Norm Rainville, predeceased), grandchildren Kevin Bechamp (Shannon), Robert McDonald (Shaun), Brian Bechamp, Sarah McDonald (Mike), and James McDonald (Erin), and great grandchildren Max, Elizabeth, Jackson, Katelyn, Peyton, Carter and Hadlee. He will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews and countless friends.
As a young man, Bob worked as a lineman for INCO and then hired on with the CNR, retiring as a Yardmaster after 34 years of service. He always enjoyed sports of any kind. In his youth, he played hockey and also pitched in a baseball league in Copper Cliff. He was a proud Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan. He assisted ‘Coach’ Jim Coleman with the Capreol Track and Field Club and later helped organize Track and Field meets for kids on Labour Day Weekend in Capreol. He fondly remembered volunteering as a Security Guard at the World Junior Track and Field Meet hosted by Sudbury, in 1988. He followed his son in hockey and his daughter in broomball. He loved being at the arena. After he retired from the CNR, he bought a skate sharpening machine and sharpened skates at the Capreol arena for several years. Quite often he would make the comment, “I put a goal in your skates!” to players of all ages.
Bob and Lois enjoyed traveling, undertaking road trips across North America, making the trips to BC to visit family and eventually spending many summers at their seasonal trailer at Stanley Park on Manitoulin Island, where they would often be found touring around from one end of the Island to the other, meeting new friends and rekindling old friendships. Special thanks to family friend, and neighbour, Dan Foucault, for helping make it possible for Bob to remain in his house for a few extra years before moving to Pioneer Manor. Also, a special thank you to M&R Grill for preparing trays of food that were delivered to Bob on several occasions. Thank you so much to the entire staff at Pioneer Manor in Sudbury. Bob was a resident there for 4 years and was looked after extremely well.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be announced at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to the Lougheed Funeral Homes.
