Robert Bruce McGee Monday April 18th 2022

With deep sadness we announce the passing of Robert B. McGee Q.C. on Monday April 18th at the age of 84. He leaves behind his loving wife Jean (nee Philp) of 58 years and his devoted daughters Wendy, Mary Louise (Michael Feraday). He also leaves behind his sister Frances, her husband Robert, and their daughter Beth.
Bob was born in Toronto on Dec 3rd, 1937, the son of Charlie and Marie McGee. He received his Honors B.A. from the University of Toronto in 1961. After graduating from Osgood Hall, L.L.B., Bob was called to the bar of Ontario in 1966. He was appointed Assistant Crown Attorney in Toronto in 1967. Bob was made Queens Counsel and Deputy Crown Attorney in 1977. Bob returned to private practice in 1982. He prosecuted and defended hundreds of criminal trials in Ontario.
Bob was very highly regarded by his many friends. He helped many aspiring lawyers with their careers along the way. Bob will be remembered for his hearty laugh and his affable and generous spirit. He loved his summers spent at his cottage on Wood Lake and holding court at many locations throughout the city especially the RCMI. Dad had a lot of courage, strength, and determination to continue to live after surviving 2 strokes in 2007.
Our family would like to express our deep gratitude to the staff at Isabel and Arthur Meighen Manor for their compassionate care, support, and friendship during the last 15 years. Bob has gone to a higher court! Dad was proud to say that he was born in Salvation Army Hospital and that he would die in Salvation Army nursing home.
A private service and internment took place on Friday April 22nd in Port Hope at the Ross Funeral Chapel and the Union Cemetery. Donations to the charity of your choice or the Salvation Army in the name of Robert B. McGee would be appreciated. People can share their condolences at www.rossfuneralchapel.com

  1. Bob was my opposing counsel on a few cases when I was a new, young Crown. He was so beloved by both the Crowns and the defence that he demonstrated the true meaning of collegiality. He once took me for lunch at the Military Club and I enjoyed that very much. He was truly a gentleman. I missed seeing him at court these past 15 years. I am sorry he suffered physical infirmity but I have been told since his death that he mind was so sharp.

To his beloved wife and daughters, and all his family and friends, my condolences. Rest in Peace, Bob.

  2. I met Mr. McGee when I had just been called to the Bar in the lawyer’s lounge at Old City Hall. He was both kind and helpful to a young & inexperienced counsel. After a rough day in court his kind and cheerful words were greatly appreciated and kept me from walking away from the profession.
My sincere condolences and may he R.I.P.

  3. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Mrs. McGee and the entire McGee family.
I add my voice to so many who remember Bob as counsel, both on the Crown and defence sides. Quite apart from his considerable skills as a lawyer, Bob was upbeat, affable, respectful, compassionate and good natured, In short, a good and decent man. He had a booming contagious laugh and enjoyed the company of his colleagues. He was a friend, and it was always a happy occasion to be in his company.. Bob was missed over the last number of years due to illness, but his passing leaves even a greater void. Rest In peace.
