Robert “Bob” James Munroe Arnott (August 4, 1948 –
September 26, 2022)
After a long, arduous battle with cancer for the past six
years, in the midst of Hurricane Fiona, Bob finally called a truce
(not a loss) and passed away peacefully in St. Martha’s
Palliative Care Unit. Born in Victoria, British Columbia, he is
survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Marie, and his adoring
family, Melissa, Mhairi, Fiona, Edgar, Mallory, Peter, Reuben, Flora,
Leigh, Matthew, Mya, Laura and Jane, and so many close family and
friends. He was predeceased by his mother, Marion (Munroe)
Arnott, his father, Lt-Commander James Arnott, and his sister Marcia
Kennedy.
Bob impressed everyone who met him with his continued courage
and endurance against all odds. But Bob was so much more
than his cancer diagnosis. Bob had a strong competitive
spirit, and athletics were a keystone of his life. Following
his graduation from the University of Ottawa, he moved to Europe where
he played hockey professionally in Germany (Hanover) and Austria
(Kapfenberger SV). Upon his return to Canada, he maintained
a strong connection to athletics as both a hockey coach, and golf club
champion in Guysborough and Amherst. In his retirement,
walking through town pushing one of his grandchildren in a stroller
was his favourite activity.
Bob’s career in the newspaper business began at the
Ottawa Journal where he met the love of his life, Marie, before moving
east to where his parents retired in White Head, Nova Scotia where
they lived in the home that has been in his family for generations,
and that he has ensured will be passed along to his children and
grandchildren for future generations to enjoy the way he has
throughout his life. Bob travelled the world, but White Head was his
true home, and he was fortunate to live his final days there. In all
the places he travelled, there was nothing more beautiful to him than
his little bit of heaven in White Head.
Above all, he was a devoted family man. Bob was a
son to be proud of, a husband to be adored, a father to be thankful
for, and a friend who was like a brother. His most cherished
role was that of grandfather to his grandchildren, who affectionately
referred to him as “Bobby”. In lieu of flowers or
donations, Bob has asked instead that you don’t wait to show
love to your own family and friends and tell them what they mean to
you. Hug them tight in Bob’s
memory.
Memorial service will be held at the Holy Trinity Anglican
Church in White Head, on Tuesday, October 4 at 11:00
a.m. followed by a reception at the Whitehead Community
Centre.
