Robert “Bob” James Magowan was born in Brownlee, Saskatchewan on July 9, 1929. He spent his growing up years on the family farm near Mawer, Saskatchewan.
Bob and his brother Gordon started school in a one-room rural school called Wesley View and moved to a two-room school in Mawer when he was in grade six where he spent the rest of his public schooling. In 1947 he attended Normal School in Moose Jaw and due to the teacher shortage was offered a teaching position in a one-room school near Redvers, Saskatchewan in October of that year. For the next four years he taught in various schools while attending Normal School and the University of Saskatchewan to upgrade his teaching certificate.
Bob met Aileen Massey while they were both attending University in Saskatoon and they were married in 1952. Together they taught for two years at a two-room rural school in Taber, Alberta before moving back to Saskatchewan where Bob farmed with his brother Gordon for four years and Aileen continued to teach. Later, Bob taught in Central Butte, Eston, Milestone, Swift Current, Lampman, and Rock Glen, Saskatchewan. He received his Masters degree in Education from the University of North Dakota in 1972. Bob and Aileen retired to Vernon, BC in 1984.
Bob is predeceased by his wife Aileen and his brother Gordon.
Bob is survived by his four children: Margaret (Lance), Brian (Wendy), (daughter-in-law Donna), Mary (Rick) and James (Evelyne); his grandchildren: Brent (Kathy), Janay (Cody), Elizabeth (Chris), Austin (Alex), Evan (Megan), Chase and Alison; his step-grandson Ira; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Bob’s two favourite hobbies were electronics and reading. For many years he was an avid ham radio operator and always had an assortment of radios in the family home and car with antennas on both. Along with other subjects, mainly industrial arts, he taught driver training, outfitting the family car with a passenger brake much to the chagrin of his teenage children who were learning to drive. When asked what he liked to read he would say, “Anything!” While he could, he enjoyed getting in his vehicle and just GOING (usually to see his kids).
Bob didn’t do a lot of talking but enjoyed being with people and listening to what they had to say. Staff at the various care homes where Bob spent his last years expressed that he was a very kind person.
Bob passed peacefully at Polson Care Home in Vernon on March 20, 2022.
