Obituary
Rita M. Cass
North Sydney
It is with a deep, broken heart that I announce the passing of my dear sister, Rita Monica Cass, age 72, on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Born in North Sydney at the old Hamilton Hospital on April 13 (Holy Thursday), Rita was the daughter of the late John A. and Hilda Regis (Murphy) Cass. Rita grew up and lived all her life in North Sydney and attended St. Mary and St. Joseph schools. She was a lifelong and faithful member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, and was a proud member of St. Joseph Senior Choir under the direction of Helen Balah Dunn. Rita was also a member of the CWL and never massed her daily 8:00 am morning mass from Monday to Friday. She was well known and respected in the town of North Sydney. She loved shopping, -“Oh boy did she”- and our weekly trips to Sydney and lunch at Simeons where the staff got to know us and our booth, which was “the last one down the aisle.” She would always bring brother Johnny home a treat without fail. She loved shopping at Home Hardware in North Sydney where she was always treated with respect. All the staff knew her, especially Carl and Shirley MacRae, Joe Musgrave and Lloyd Fudge. Due to health reasons, Rita went to live at the Northside Community Guest Home where she was welcomed by Vivian Finney and Kerri Kerr on her first day, and they assured her she would get along just fine.
Rita is survived by her only sister Betty Cass (Bernie Blinkhorn), of Point Edward, along with a number of nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her two brothers Johnny and Jimmy Cass.
The family would like to thank everyone in Joseph Hall at he Northside Community Guest Home where they all loved her dearly. Special thanks to Kelly Brown, Mary Lynn MacIntyre, Laura, Ann MacNeil and all the CCAs who went above and beyond to make Rita happy. Many thanks to Dr. Mary Hutchison, Dr. Alex Wawer, Dr. Peter Poulos, Dr. Foley, Tanya 1 and Tanya 2, Palliative Care and EHS. Thanks to family who have travelled from afar to be with Betty and Bernie at this difficult time. Special thank you to Bernie’s daughters for all of their assistance for their father, and also to Robert and Charlene Cass for all they have done.
A visitation for Rita will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 1, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Chapel at 107 Pleasant St. North Sydney. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Deacon Dave Lewis officiating. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home or a charity of choice. Online Condolences may be left for the family by leaving a message on the tribute wall of the obituary page at www.wjdooley.com.
