We, the family of Richard “Rick” Albert Gillis, regret to announce his passing on Sunday, April 17, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born September 5, 1962, in Sydney, he was the son of the late Duncan and Alice (Cooper) Gillis.
Rick attended Riverview Rural High School and continued his education at the Nova Scotia Community College earning a certificate in mechanics. He worked many years in the restaurant business during his youth then moved onto automotive dealerships where he spent the rest of his career, his last job being at Plaza Ford.
In Rick’s younger years, he would spend his time playing hockey and baseball. Later on, he kept engaged with his love of sports – NASCAR, hockey, baseball or sports of any kind always on the television screen.
Years ago, he adopted a stray kitten named Oreo. Rick would spend hours brushing his coat and loving him endlessly – even dropping everything to search when Oreo escaped out a window one night.
Rick is survived by his sister, Debbie (Paul) Rudderham, Point Edward; brother, Terrance Gillis, Sydney; niece, Hannah Rudderham; nephew, Kyle Rudderham; and brother-in-law, Robert Morrison, Sydney.
Besides his parents, Richard was predeceased by his brother, Barry Gillis.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, April 22 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., followed by a service in the chapel at 4:30 p.m. officiated by Mr. Gary Grant. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemoriachapel@ns.sympatico.ca
