Obituary
Richard Cecil Murray, or as he preferred to be called Dick, passed away suddenly on January 8, 2022 at his home in Hillsburgh, Ontario. He was born in Limerick, Ireland on March 28, 1940 and was one of 9 children to Daniel and Nora.
Dick was known for his storytelling and immense sense of humour. He would entertain those around him with funny anecdotes and captivating stories. Never a quiet moment, as he would happily belt out a song at a party or on stage during one of his performances with the local theatre. He had many quips you would often hear, such as “Beauty!”, “Yo” or if you ever played a game of Euchre with Dick, you would have heard “El Cheapo” as he laid down a low card.
He worked for Mack Trucks before his retirement 20 odd years ago. During his retirement Dick spent long hours within the courts – golf and tennis that is. Standing on a lush green fairway always took him back to his beloved Ballybunion Golf Club. He loved playing and hoped that his daughters would also find the same passion for the game… sorry Dad. But they were more than happy to chauffeur him round 18 holes. Speaking of chauffeuring, he did some of that himself and would tell stories of the impressive folks he met over the years. As an active member of the Erin Tennis Club, he could deliver a killer shot that, according to one member, “took me totally out of any possible complacency.”
He took great pride in his Irish heritage, was a cheeky chap that never took life too seriously, marched to his own beat, known for wearing caps and collars up, refused to change his clocks over, self-proclaimed procrastinator and the busiest social butterfly who provided a lot of belly laughs and love.
He leaves behind his daughters Erin (Kevin Wheatley) and Heather (Piper) and ex-wife Patricia. Also survived by his sisters Noreen Cusack (Len and Brian) and Rena Elliott (Les and Ruth) and nieces Patricia Murray, Robyn Máirtín and nephew Daniel Murray. Also greatly loved and missed by nieces, nephews and countless friends in Ireland and Canada.
You have gone to rest before your time
though you leave your loved ones here behind.
We will stay awhile, you are not alone
we’ll be here to carry you home.
May He guide your way,
may the road be straight.
May it lead you onto Heaven’s gate
and when you near that sacred throne,
may the angels come to carry you home.
A celebration of life will be held for our beloved Dick at a future date.
