Reverend Eric Theriault age 90 passed away August 27 in Halifax. Born in 1932, he was the son of the late Eugene and Edith (Duffy) Theriault.
Fr. Eric was predeceased by his brother Ben and sister Frankie along with her husband Sam Johnston. He is survived by his sisters, Sister Patricia Theriault SCH of Halifax and Edie Comeau and husband Al. Also left behind to mourn are several nieces and nephews who he was very close with.
Father Theriault was born in Dartmouth in 1932 and attended College St. and St. Peter’s Schools. He then went to St. Mary’s High School and graduated from St. Mary’s University in 1952. Following studies in Theology at Holy Heart Seminary, he was ordained in St. Peter’s Parish in 1957, the Parish he was baptized and confirmed in.He did Post-Graduate studies at Catholic University of America and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. as well at Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium.
He has served as Pastor and Administrator of various parishes in the Archdiocese: St. John’s in Windsor, St. Genevieve’s in East Chezzetcook, St. Anthony’s in Hubbard, St. Paul’s in Dartmouth, St. Peter’s in Ketch Harbour, St. John the Baptist, St. Michael’s and St. Thomas Aquinas in Halifax.
Fr. Theriault has been associated with the Nova Scotia Hospital since 1963: eleven years as Chaplain, nine years as a Member of the Board of Management and Director of the Christmas Project since 1978 where he solicited items to be given to patients at Christmas time who would otherwise be forgotten. He also served as a Member of the Board of the Halifax County Hospital and Chair of the Board of the Atlantic School of Theology.
He was Chairman of the Priest’s Council of the Archdiocese, President of the National Federation of Priests’ Councils, and a member of the International Steering Committee of Priests’ Assemblies of the English Speaking World. He served on various Commissions of the Archdiocese and was named Episcopal Vicar for Priests for the Diocese. Fr. Theriault taught at St. Mary’s University and was Supervisor of Clinical Pastoral Education at Holy Heart Seminary and the Nova Scotia Hospital.
Fr. Theriault retired from full time ministry in 2001.
Visitation will be held on Thursday September 1 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm in St. Peter’s Church, 10 Maple Street Dartmouth
Funeral Mass will be11:00 a.m. on Friday September 2 at in St. Peter’s Church
Burial to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Lower Sackville N.S.
