Boughton, Rev. D. Paul
Our family announce Paul’s passing on Sunday, April 10, 2022, in his 84th year, following a challenging decline related to stroke and dementia. He is loved deeply by his wife of 56 years, Joan, and their 3 children, Richard (Pam), Sarah (Kris), and Andy. His 5 grandchildren Alexandra, Hallie & Duncan Boughton, and Sydney & Grace Baumgarten will treasure the memory of him as their kind, generous and fun loving Grandpa and Papa.
Raised in Toronto by parents Dave and Olga Boughton (deceased), Paul, the eldest of 5 siblings, is survived by Keith (Kathy) of Kamloops BC, Roger of Midland, and twin sisters Lesley of Toronto and Roberta (David) of Midland. He will be remembered with fondness and respect by numerous nieces and nephews spread throughout southern Ontario, British Columbia, the USA and Israel. His cousins David (Ruth) Wainwright and Anne Boughton will remember him with love.
Early in life Paul embraced a strong Christian faith and value system, one fostered by his parents and his association with Ossington Baptist Church, Toronto. He studied at McMaster University (BA, 1961) and continued into McMaster Divinity College (BD, 1964). Paul served in several Baptist churches (BCOQ) as a student, then fulltime at Hillsburgh Baptist. Later (1967 to 1971), Paul completed a masters program at Andover Newton Theological School (Newton, Massachusetts). His vocation took him to Trinity Baptist in Winnipeg, Manitoba, then to First Baptist in Collingwood. Paul subsequently added chaplaincy training and studies to become an accredited Intentional Interim Minister with the United Church of Canada, serving in that capacity until retirement.
Paul’s unique dedication to expanding his knowledge, his openness and critical appreciation of new ideas and perspectives, compelled him to be a life-long learner. He loved to serve others and share insights gleaned through his pursuit of knowledge, exploring life’s meaning, spirituality and the mysteries of the universe. Paul’s optimistic view of life, his genuine interest in all people, an infectious laughter, appreciation of things both simple and profound, and his remarkable generosity of spirit and kindness bequeath to all who knew him a deep and powerful respect and sense of connection. He will live on in our hearts and reflections.
Paul’s family want to thank SEHC, VON Respite and CG&M Hospital for their care and support. We are especially grateful to the remarkable staff at Bay Haven Care Community, Collingwood, who cared for Paul, showing consistent warmth, understanding and kindness during his stay, despite the pandemic restrictions and stressors. If he could have expressed himself, he would have said “Thanks…very much…everyone!”.
Funeral arrangements are provided by Fawcett Funeral Home, Collingwood. Although cremation has taken place, a Memorial service and gathering is being planned for mid May. Please refer to the Fawcett Funeral Home website for details. Anyone wishing to make a charitable donation in Paul’s memory is invited to consider Trinity United Church, Trinity United Church Donations Bay Haven Care Community in Collingwood bayhaven.com/donations/
