Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Reginald “Reg/Reggie” Strand announce his passing at Royal University Hospital, with his daughter at his side, on November 22 at the age of 75 years.
Reg was born in Preeceville on February 1, 1947 and spent the majority of his life in the area. He attended elementary school at North Prairie and high school in Preeceville. As a teen and young adult, Reg was an amazing athlete; he enjoyed golf and curling, however he excelled at hockey and ball.
After leaving school, he worked construction in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Following which, he and his brother, Ron, bought land clearing equipment that they used to do custom land clearing when they were not farming the family land. Along with his brothers, for a time, he held a private pilot’s licence for recreational flying. In the late 1980’s Reg headed north to Yukon and Alaska to work in the logging industry. This was a time in his life he was very proud of and would speak of these years often.
In the early 1990’s, Reg returned to the family farm at North Prairie to help out with his parents and the family farm. He remained there until his entry into hospital. During the winters, he drove truck along with his brothers until he fell ill in 2016. Although he had sold his cattle and land many years before, he still assisted his brother, Ron, with all the aspects of farming when his health permitted.
In November 2009, Reg was elected as a councillor to the RM of Preeceville; a position he held for 13 years until weeks before his passing. He thoroughly enjoyed this position and was an excellent representative on council. He sat on the Parkland Regional Library Board for all 13 years and was very involved; often donating out of his own pocket for fundraisers. If there was a problem on a road, he often took his own tractor to fix things, stating that he knew “the guys are busy”. He loved going to the RM Office for lunch or coffee and muffins, chatting with whoever was around or visiting the guys in the shop.
Reg was predeceased by his parents, Lorne “Bud” and Shirley (Reynolds) Strand, his sister, Gail Zawislak, a sister-in-law, Beverly (Walker) Strand. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his daughter, Angela (Kirk Baillie) Strand, and their son, Sam Baillie of Saskatoon. Sam was the apple of his grandfather’s eye and takes after his “Tractor Papa” in his athletic abilities; not to mention his great hair! Reg is also survived by his brothers Ron (Lynn Cameron) Strand of Yorkton, SK his son Jeff (Rosemarie) Strand and their sons: Hayden (Desrai Englot) and Justen Strand all of Preeceville, SK; Brian (Sally Palagain) of Sturgis, SK and his children: Trent (Megan) Strand and their son, Weston of Little Prairie, BC; Brent (Tracy Ross) Strand of Sturgis, SK; Melanie (Ken) Kidder of Edmonton, AB; nephew Scott Zawislak and his son Cole of Regina, SK. He is also remembered and loved by close cousin Brenda (Dave) Lewis of Holly, Michigan along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Reg also has a large network of friends who will miss his calm, easygoing attitude. Reg will be missed for his hard work ethic, his patience and his wonderful smile. His nephews remember him as a great teacher; willing to teach them anything they wanted to know about the farm, hunting or mechanics.
As per Reg’s wishes, no memorial service will be held. A private interment of Reg’s cremated remains will take place at a later date in Preeceville Cemetery. Cremation services provided by Mourning Glory – Acadia McKague’s Funeral Chapel, 915 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon, SK.
A special thank-you to the staff on Ward 6000 at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, SK for their care, respect and compassion given to Reg and Angela during his last week of life. Those wishing may make a donation in Reg’s name to: Preeceville Parkland Library, 27 Main Street, Preeceville, SK S0A 3B0.
“For this one farmer, the worries are over; lie down and rest your head. Your time has been and the struggles enough. Put the tractor in the shed.”
