Murphy, Raymond William, age 87.
Ray passed peacefully with family by his side at the RK
MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish on Jan. 26,
2022.
Born in Antigonish on January 31, 1934, some of
Ray’s early years were spent in the Lismore area before the
family settled back on the family farm in Ohio.
Ray became a friend to many as a softball and tug-of-war
coach, and through his 47-year career with Food Services at StFX
University, from where he retired as purchasing manager. At
StFX, Ray took great pride in the quality of service to the
priests’ dining room, in particular, and the
students’ dining hall.
At home on the small family farm in Ohio, Ray was a talented
cook, taking the helm of all special occasion meals and Sunday dinners
for his big family. Ray and his beloved wife Anna raised 10 children
and were active members of the St. Joseph’s Church and
school communities. He enjoyed tending to his large
vegetable garden and animals on the farm, especially his much-loved
draft horse, Blaze.
In retirement, Ray enjoyed his part-time role with the
Guysborough Journal, delivering the weekly newspaper to stores from
Antigonish to Mulgrave.
Ray was a terrific storyteller. Many visitors to
the nursing home — as well as staff — were treated
to tales of entertaining characters and episodes from days gone by,
always punctuated with bouts of laughter.”
He is survived by his children, Bill (Heather), Ohio; Mary
(Gord) Murrin, Ohio; Allan (Helen), Ottawa; Lisa (Ronnie) Chisholm,
