Obituary
Ray was born March 20, 1930 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Being the eldest of six siblings, at grade 6 he ended up leaving school as he was needed to help his parents on the farm. In 1949 he began mixed farming on a farm of his own east of Ponoka, Alberta. On August 24, 1957 he married his wife Doris and together they began raising their first two daughters and continued farming there until 1961 when they moved to a farm they bought north of Rimbey, Alberta. It was there that their two youngest daughters were born. Some of Rays fondest memories are those spent with his children growing up fishing and having family picnics down at the Blind Man River, which flowed through the property. He enjoyed his time spent there with other relatives as well.
In the summer of 1974 Ray and his family moved to the beautiful Creston Valley which ended up being one of Ray’s favourite places along with the foothills of Alberta. Ray also enjoyed socializing and playing and singing at the Wynndel community coffee house, being involved when it first started. Ray worked on the Creston flats swathing grain, driving truck from combined as well as helping with potato harvest. He ran Creston Valley precast from 1980 to about 1995.
As well as cattle ranching and mixed farming, Ray enjoyed landscaping and rock work. During his years of living in Creston and Wynndel, he became a member of the Wynndel and Erickson Covenant Churches where he served as Usher and helped with needed church building maintenance such as working on roof etc.
Ray is predeceased by his parents Emil and Lydia Vogel, his wife Doris of 61 years, his sister Doreen, and one granddaughter Liana.
Ray will be lovingly remembered as the kind, honest and humble father he was, by his daughters Arlis (Al) Miller, Iva (Mark)Johnson, Joy (Dan) Thompson, and Mavis Vogel. Also lovingly remembered by his eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one brother, four sisters, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Crestview Village staff for their care and support during his years there.
We also give a sincere thanks to all who were involved: Creston Valley Emergency, Home Support and Red Cross, and Home and Community Palliative Care Teams for the care of our dad in his last days.
Ray went to his Heavenly home to be with his Lord and Saviour on June 8, 2022 at the age of 92.
Celebration of life to be held Tuesday, June 14 at 11:00 AM at the Erickson Covenant Church 6017 Canyon – Lister Road.
