Ray Steinmann was born on September 5, 1936, in Wellesley, Ontario. He passed away peacefully on Oct. 21, 2022, at the age of 86.
He was the beloved husband of Anna (Bender) for over 60 years and loving father of Val Steinmann (Brent Klassen), Rosie Steinmann (Chris Janzen), Don Dyck Steinmann (Tanya Dyck Steinmann), and Rebecca Steinmann (Jeremy Bergen). Grandpa Ray will be dearly missed by his grandchildren: Kieran (Naomi Frazer), Nathan, and Joel Klassen; Yara (Jesse Reusser) and Kai Janzen; Katarina, Ruby, and Johanna Dyck Steinmann; Seth and Eli Bergen.
Survived by his sister, Marjorie Bender (Ralph), brothers, Harold (Rita), Earl (Eileen), Ervin (Irla), sisters-in-law Audrey Hoffman, Elaine Cressman, Norma Steinmann, Ruth Steinmann, and brother-in-law, Harold Bender (Audrey). Predeceased by his parents, Bena (Lebold) and Elmer Steinmann, sister Rita Cressman, brothers Wayne Steinmann and Bruce Steinmann, sister-in-law, Marilyn Steinmann, and brothers-in-law, Gerry Hoffman and Leonard Cressman.
Ray devoted his adult life to his work as a mechanic, his growing family, and his deep faith in God. He was the owner of a small garage in Bright before establishing “Ray’s Garage” in New Hamburg. He ran his business with honesty and integrity, earning the trust and respect of the local community. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, always giving of himself to provide a secure and loving home. Ray was a gifted storyteller with a great sense of humour. He could offer a wise word of practical advice, but always with a spirit of humility .
In retirement, Ray volunteered at Out of the Cold and the New Hamburg Thrift shop. He spent many hours reading books and engaging in conversation with friends about church, politics, farming, and of course automotive mechanics. When he turned 80, he surprised everyone by putting his stories into writing and publishing his memoirs, Zero to Eighty in a Flash.
As a lifelong member of the Mennonite church, Ray had a deep personal faith and loved exploring theological questions. He carried this faith with him to his last hours of life, being at peace knowing that, despite his failing body, all was in God’s hands. Ray will be deeply missed by his wife Anna, as well as their children, grandchildren, and the extended family.
