Boyce was born on September 4th, 1950 in Hooping Harbour to Thomas and Florence Randell. He was the last of six children with two sisters and 3 brothers: the late Ethel Reid (Ludwick), the late Spurgeon (the late Marie), Ruby Randell (the late Freeman), Claude (Jean), Beaton (Shirley) as well as half-sister, the late Winnie Cassell.
He married Alma Elisabeth Cassell on January 30, 1969 in Hooping Harbour. Born to this union was six children. Five Daughters; Glennis Randell (Andre Du Plessis), Phyllis Patey (Scott), Mavis Canning (Brian), Mona Randell (Todd), Shirley Gillard (Howard) as well as son Jeffrey (Vicki Lemay). He also has 16 Grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 29 nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
Boyce taught in school for two winters in Williamsport. He attended college in Stephenville and then worked for Arthur Locke of Roddickton installing furnaces. He moved into the fishing industry and worked various jobs and positions in plants around the island. This job also included a trip to Oslo, Norway where he dismantled fish processing equipment, prepared it for shipping and put it back together when it arrived in NL.
When he left the fishing industry he started B.J. Randell and Son. A self employed business that serviced heating, air conditioning and refrigeration, that he ran successfully for many years, After retiring his business he worked in Kitchener, ON for a short time before moving on to work at Wilderness North, based out of Thunder Bay. He worked there for 18 years at a fishing resort that he often referred to as a working vacation.
He prayed and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior on February 21, 1972 along with his wife, Alma. He devoted much of his life outside of work to the Apostolic Faith work in Englee. He was a choir director for many years, played in the music department, volunteered as a Sunday School teacher, helped build a new church and took on many carpenter projects around the church.
He was known as a Jack of all trades, and lent a helping hand to many friends and family around him. He spent much time in recent years doing whatever he could to help his two brothers (Spurgeon and Claude) living next door, and his sister Ruby down the road.
His love of laughter and fun, being a jokester and his infectious grin was well known around his community. A community that he loved and was proud of. He loved being involved and helping to make it a great place to live.
He had some health issues in past years that he faced with strength and courage. He was back on his feet as soon as possible to face his next challenge head on.
On Saturday, December 3, 2022 his family called the ambulance, as he had been struggling with sickness for the past week. He was transported to St. Anthony Hospital and on Tuesday, December 4, 2022 he was airlifted to Western Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook. He fought to the end and on Friday, December 9th, 2022 at 1:26 pm, he passed peacefully away surrounded by family as they sang the last refrain of “Because He Lives”. When the minister whispered last amen, he took his heavenly flight.
