Obituary
Priscilla “Ruth” Hutchinson
Our world became a sadder place when our dear mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt and friend to many passed away peacefully on Friday April 1st in Cobourg. Born in Queensville, Ontario on February 23, 1925, she was the youngest of nine children of Fred and Mary Smith. Her early years were spent helping her parents on the family farm raising vegetables, pigs and turkeys which her father would take to market in Toronto and sell locally. In her late teens she moved to Toronto to live with her sisters Jean and Shirley working at Simpsons and at Gray-Bonney Tools. The Smith sisters, including Isabelle and Muriel, formed a strong bond that became a trademark throughout their lives, and spilled over to their children. The family have fond memories of the sisters cooking together in the kitchen at family gatherings, talking loudly and laughing, especially at Christmas or New Years when the bottle of cordial was brought out. At the end of the war, Ruth’s sister Shirley and husband Cecil of Warkworth introduced her to Cec’s friend Elton Hutchinson. That was the beginning of a courtship that involved many trips in Elton’s truck between Warkworth and Queensville. Elton and Ruth were married on September 6, 1947 and had 72 happy years together until Elton’s passing in 2019. They spent their entire married life living, working and having fun in the Warkworth and Campbellford area until moving to Cobourg in 2013. Ruth loved to cook and was famous for her homemade soups, pies and butter tarts. She held various jobs in administration support locally until she retired. Her interests included sewing, knitting, reading, bowling, golfing, curling and travelling. She was a member of St. John’s United Church in Campbellford and spent many years as President of the UCW and organizing the church kitchen for various events. She was highly involved in community activities as a supporter of the Campbellford Rotary Club. For a number of years Ruth and Elton owned an orchard at the edge of Campbellford, which they operated in addition to their full-time jobs. Family and friends from far and wide enjoyed helping in the orchard or to just coming to pick their most delicious apples.
She and Elton raised 3 children – Sandra Thain (John) of Pickering, Maureen Bilcox (Doug) of Marmora and Garth (Nancy) of Thessalon. She was especially proud of her grandchildren Rhonda (Leon), Michelle (Michael), Brian (Dawn), Scott, Tyler (Nicole), Justine (Justin) and her great grandchildren Matthew, Easton, Jade, Gage, Emma and Jack.
She was predeceased her siblings Don, Madeline, Verne, Isabelle (Lockie), Muriel (Pinder), Jean (Case), Lorne and Shirley (Christie). She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. We want to say a special thank you to the staff of Hope Street Terrace in Port Hope for the special care and support they provided to Ruth for the last 3 years and to Dr. Mulé and the team (Tara, Karen and Jessie) in the Palliative Care unit at Northumberland Hills Hospital for making mom’s last few days as comfortable as possible.
The family will receive friends at the Weaver Family Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Warkworth on Saturday April 9th, 2022 from 12:00 – 2:00, followed by the service at 2:00 pm. Attendance for the service is limited to 80 persons at this time, and the wearing of masks is encouraged to protect those who are health compromised, please. 1. Dearest Maureen,

I am sad to hear she is no longer with us, but will remain in our hearts forever. I always loved visiting with Ruth at the end of a long day when my shift was over, she was very calm, and she is one of the reasons I love what I do. Lots of love from Rebecca (I think you will remember)
