“The Lord is my portion”, says my soul, “therefore I will hope in Him.”
–Lamentations 3:24
On Sunday, July 31, 2022 the Lord called home our beloved Dad, Opa and great-Opa, Pieter Joffers, at the age of 96.
Pieter was born in Smilde, the Netherlands, on January 20, 1926. He spent his younger years on the family farm, and later served three years in military service in Indonesia. He married Nelly Niemantsverdriet in 1955 and shortly after their marriage, immigrated to Canada, coming directly to the Thunder Bay area where he has lived since. He was employed at Hawker Siddeley until his retirement in 1991. His hobbies were bowling and puzzling, as well as grooming his yard and garden where he took great pride in their appearance. He was an active member of the United Reformed Church of Thunder Bay. Most important to him were his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his friends. Pieter is survived by his children: daughter Clara Prenger (Harry), grandchildren Daniel (Amanda), Kenneth (Katherine), Robert (Megan), Katie (Darryl), Nicole (Gerard), Hendrik John (Treena); daughter Aly Miedema (John), grandchildren Michael (Donna), David (Michelle), Matthew (Lisa), Alyssa (Matthew), Andrew†; daughter Kathleen Joffers; daughter Glenda Dykstra (John), grandchildren Janine (Ray), Corey† (Jill), Mitchell (Dana), Charmaine (Adam); numerous great-grandchildren; brother Lucas (Anneke), sister-in-law Renske and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Nelly, 2 sisters and 2 brothers (in the Netherlands), grandson Andrew Miedema, grandson Corey Dykstra and great-grandson Eric Dykstra. Visitation will take place at the United Reformed Church, 23 Hwy 130, on Friday, August 5 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the United Reformed Church on Saturday, August 6 at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Rev. John Ysinga. Interment will take place with family only at the Stanley Hill Cemetery prior to the service. The family would like to express their special thanks to the staff at Jasper Place for caring for our Dad for the years he resided there, and also to the team of doctors and nurses who took care of Dad’s needs during his stay at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Hospital.
