Obituary For Phillip Malcolm Grant
July 13, 1942 – October 29, 2022
Phillip Malcolm Grant, 80, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2022, in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Phil was the 2nd child born to Malcolm and Anne Grant on July 13, 1942, in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Grant family moved to Kamloops, BC in 1943.
Phil is survived by his loving children Trevor (Wanda) Grant and Dianne (Jason) Montgomery, his older brother Larry (Sandra) Grant along with his nieces Carolyn and Margaret and nephew David (Misty) Grant. From the next generation he is survived by his beloved grandsons Bryton, Mitchell, Tristan and Devon, his wonderful bonus grandchildren Ashley, Dylan, Dakotah, Jae, Alex, and Alyssa and all of the great grandkids Brooklyn, Kenzie, Kimmie, Bella, Jaxson, Archie and Oliver, and also his great niece’s and nephew’s Kayla, Deirda, Liam and Jesse.
Phil attended school at Lloyd George Elementary, Kamloops Senior Secondary and University College of the Caribou. He enjoyed playing hockey, baseball, and volleyball and in high school he started playing the trombone. Music became a major part of his life. He played in MANY bands including; KSS High School Band, Rocky Mountain Rangers Reserve Band, The Kamloops Rube Band, Kamloops Elk Band, Dog House Dixie Land Band, 1994 Canada Summer Games Band, The Kamloops Big Band, The Big Chill Band and The Blues Brothers Band. His love of playing music allowed him to travel all over the world performing in many countries and for various events nationally and abroad. Later in life, he finished his musical career playing with The West Shore Concert Band and the Chief and Petty Officers Band in Victoria, BC.
Aside from his love of music, Phil enjoyed hunting, fishing, having beers on Friday nights with his best friends and had a great love for animals, especially dogs. From a young age he developed a special bond with his family dog Nifty and throughout the rest of his life with many others; Chamois, Char, Kino, Bandit, Zeus, Violet Rose, Silus, Cain, Finn, Emma, Kasey, and his great grand puppy Goose.
After a career of managing and working in the family upholstery shop, Grant’s Upholstery, Phil moved in with his daughter and her family in 1999. They relocated to Victoria, BC in 2003 and then spent a few years living in Duncan, BC. When the family was posted to Ottawa, Ontario he made the long journey across Canada to be with them. In 2015 Phil moved back west to Grande Prairie, AB to stay with his son and daughter in law. He moved into the Hythe Pioneer Retirement Home in 2016 where he thrived and thoroughly enjoyed his time there meeting new people and making deep connections with dear friends. Phil will be deeply missed by everyone that knew him. He was a true social butterfly, always singing a song and always had smile on his face!
Phillip’s family will host a celebration of his life July 2023 in Kamloops, BC.
