Obituary
Passed peacefully away with his son by his side at the Health Sciences Centre on Friday, November 20, 2020, Philip Woodford, aged 85 years of North Arm, Holyrood.
Left with fond and loving memories are his devoted son Paul (Diane), cherished granddaughter Kandace, sister Mary Brophy, brother Michael (Margaret), sisters-in-law: Jean Murrin (Bill) and Angela Maloney (Nish), nieces, nephews and a large circle of friends.
Predeceased by his wife Josephine (nee Maloney) in 2019, parents Michael and Theresa, sister Isabel, brothers: Richard, Leonard, Aiden and John.
Phil was born in Conception Harbour and began his career with the Newfoundland Railway (Canadian National Railway) in 1956. He wore several hats with the railway being a conductor, brakeman and finally a trainman upon retiring two years after the railway closed in 1988. He briefly detoured from riding the rails in 1968 and became one of the first drivers for the CN Roadcruiser Bus Service that eventually replaced the passenger train service. Following retirement from the Newfoundland Railway, he became the caretaker of a family friend’s six acre property which he did for the next 30 years until the age of 84. In addition, from 1973 to 2008, he also found the time to assist his wife in the operation of a personal care home for seniors.
The family is forever grateful for the care and compassion provided by Dr. Rod Martin and his team, nurses and staff of 5 NA Orthopedic Unit during his last 44 days.
Resting at Dunphy’s Funeral Home, Holyrood. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 6 and Friday, October 7, 2022 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Holyrood on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 10:30 am with inurnment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery Holyrood.
