Peter Martin Willems aged 96, passed away peacefully July 4th, 2022 at Bluewater Health, Sarnia surrounded by his loving family. Peter was born in Maira Heide, The Netherlands on February 12, 1926. Peter immigrated to Canada in 1954 with his wife Henrica (nee: van de Crommert). He is survived by his dearly beloved wife of 68 years, Henrica and their 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Loving father of Trudy (Jerry) Ladanchuk, John (Debbie) Willems, Jo-Anne Szabo (John Hanly), Connie (Dale) Graham, Mike (Tracy) Willems. Cherished Opa of Amanda (Doug) Amlin, Josh (Kelly) Ladanchuk, Vanessa Ladanchuk, Kristie (Filip Guzina) Willems, Jeremy (Sandie) Willems, Brian (Astrid Raynor) Szabo, Jamie Szabo, Scott (Olivia Pacini) Szabo, Hillary Graham, Danielle Graham, Kraig (Krystal Smith) Willems, Tyler Willems, Brett (Taryn Glass) Willems. Loving Great-Opa of Lucas Szabo, Jesse Scheiding, Kayden, Karson and Khloee Willems, Sydney Amlin and Moira Ladanchuk. One of nine children, he is survived by his brothers Theo Willems, Jan Willems, his sisters Helen Willems and Reit (Rein) van d Ven all of Holland (The Netherlands) and his sister-in-laws Connie Willems, Annie Willems. Predeceased by son-in law Pete Szabo (2006), his parents Johannes & Johanna Willems, brothers and sister-in laws William, Miek (Dina) and Gerard Willems, Anne Willems, Jopie Willems and his sister An (Martien) Kuijpers. Peter worked at Abbott Boats and then started a construction company Willems Brothers Construction in 1965, with his brother Bill. After his retirement he golfed for many years with his wife, at Huron Oaks walking 18 holes a few times a week. They vacationed in New Port Richey, Florida for over 20 years at Suncoast Gateway Mobile Village. He made a few trips with his wife, accompanied by his brother -in law and sister-in law, Will and Frank Aben to his favourite place to vacation Utah, USA, where he loved the mountainous scenery. He enjoyed bicycle riding, going for walks on the trails and most of all working in his basement workshop. Peter’s favourite place to shop was The Restore, where he also donated wooden hammers and charcuterie boards that he made himself in his basement workshop. We will all miss his joking and teasing ways and earnest conversations about finances, real estate, house construction, having a good career and building a solid family unit. Family and friends will be received at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia on Monday July 11th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton (The Restore) or Bluewater Health Foundation Sarnia (cheques only at the funeral home please).
