Mellish
– Peter McLaren Mellish of Summerside died on
Sunday, February 27th, 2022, at MacLeod Clinton
View Lodge, Clinton. He passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully at
the age of 85.
Born on July 4, 1936 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Peter was
the only son of Pauline Jacques and Wellington Mellish. He graduated
from Rothesay Collegiate School and continued his education at Mount
Allison University.
He began his career in banking at the Bank of Commerce in
Saint John, where he met his beloved wife of 60 years, Anne. Peter
took many career paths including Beef farming, construction and
finally as an entrepreneur with a diversified food and vending
company.
For most of his life, Peter was captivated with the sea and
his lifelong passion was both boat building and sailing. He
was happiest when at the helm of the Hawnalea, braving the ocean
elements and eager for another adventure. He sailed
many ocean voyages and enjoyed winters spent in the
Caribbean Islands. Peter was one of the founding members of
the original Summerside Yacht Club, where he met many of his lifelong
friends.
Peter was a fiercely proud Grampy and his love shone
brightest when interacting with his grandchildren, Amanda and
Ben.
He was a master chef when it came to cooking, but Peter will
be remembered most fondly for his family prime rib
dinners.
Peter is survived by his loving wife Anne (Emmerson). His two
sons, Peter (Carolyn), and Stephen (Jane Hicks). His grandchildren
Amanda (Andrew Hughes) and Ben (Maddison Fisher). Sister-in-law Susan
(John Morley) and brother-in-law Robert Dykeman.
Peter is predeceased by his friends for life and fellow
sailors, Ralph Thompson, Bob Pinkham, Ross Woodside, Elmer Newson,
Lloyd McCarthy, Donald Ross, and Richard Dick Wedge.
There will be no funeral or visitation by family request but
if so desired, memorial donations can be made in his honour to the
Junior Sailing Program at the Summerside Yacht
Club.
“Peter
sailed off into the sunset one final time on Sunday. May a fair wind
fill your sails to the land of Hawnalea.”
