It is with deep sadness we announce the accidental passing of Peter Goertzen on Monday, January 17, 2022.
Pete was born in Winkler Manitoba on January 8, 1950. His formative years were spent in Mexico prior to moving back to Canada permanently.
He was living his best life when it was tragically cut short. He spent most of his time working on his rural Anola property after retiring several years ago. He loved his dog Toby, who was his constant companion when he cut trees for firewood, shoveled snow or worked in his shop.
Being the social person he was, Pete also spent countless hours with family and friends, be it siblings, brothers-in-law, neighbours or childhood friends.
When many of his peers became long distance truck drivers, taking them away from home for days at a time, Pete chose to remain closer to home because of his love for his wife, family, friends and his cats.
Pete’s wife Susan, of 44 years, humoured him with all his “projects”. She realized puttering in his shop, restoring old vehicles or searching for just the right treasure provided him untold joy.
They worked together maintaining their large yard and garden during the summer months. During their early marriage, they also took numerous trips in their motorhome, on one occasion traveling as far as Mexico to visit his oldest sister and her family.
Pete’s kindness and generosity were well known when he would drop everything to help a neighbour, friend or stranger or offer their home for family gatherings. He also loved sharing fresh produce from their garden with those in need.
His kindness also extended to the animal kingdom where he would feed wild rabbits at the back of their property to prevent them from razing the garden.
Although Pete’s younger years in Mexico were at times difficult, he made peace with God later in life and we are confident we will see him again.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Susan, his siblings and their spouses, his sister-in-law, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, neighbours and his dog, Toby.
The memories we shared comfort me every day. You left this world but not my heart.
To honour Pete’s memory and in recognition of his love for animals, donations may be made to CNIB Guide Dogs Foundation 1-800-563-2642 www.cnib.ca.
He would also hope that you share fond memories of him, similar to the many touching and often humorous stories that have been recounted by numerous friends since his passing.
A private celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at 2:00pm. Those that wish to join the service virtually can do so by clicking on the photos and videos tab.
