With heavy hearts we say goodbye to our much beloved mom. After a strong fight against dementia, mom passed away peacefully in the early morning of October 3. A lifelong resident of Thunder Bay and area, mom was born in the middle of what would become six sisters and six brothers. Growing up in the farmhouse in South Gillies taught mom life-long lessons in love, patience, hard work, perseverance and maintaining a good sense of humour (those who know can attest to how much you needed that around the clan)! Being very gifted behind the controls of her sewing machine and knitting needles, many of the clothes, sweaters, socks, mitts and toques that her children wore growing up were true Helmi originals. Many happy summers were spent at Northern Lights Lake camping, fishing, and gathering around the bonfire for lots of laughter surrounded by family, brothers and sisters, in-laws, nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her husband George Morris, parents John and Aina Oksanen, numerous brothers, sisters, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. She is survived by sisters Irene Enders and Diane Atwood; brothers Ron, William, and Bobby Oksanen; sons Dan (Angie), Don, and Ron; daughter JoAnne Kostiuk (Dave); grandchildren Daryl Anne, Daniel, Kirk, Sean, Madison, Nolan and great-grandson Grant. Cremation has taken place and per her wishes a private family service will be held. If friends desire, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated. The family would like to thank all of the incredible staff in Hummingbird unit at Pinewood, especially the angels in scrubs.
A mother’s hug lasts long after she lets go.
