It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to an amazing woman. Pearl Gertrude Clarke passed away at home with her husband and son by her side on Friday, January 28, 2022, at the age of 81.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (MacQueen) Hareguy.
Pearl is survived by her husband, Fred; four children, Evelyn (Arbuckle), Calgary, Frederick, Sydney, Darlene (Baxter), Halifax and Colleen (Aubrey) Graham, Halifax; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Lindsay, Colin, Courtney, Carrie, Julia, Brandon and Kyle; and three great-grandchildren, Victoria, Chase and Jackson.
Pearl was predeceased by her loving grandson, Michael Edwards and her son-in-law, Glenn Arbuckle. The last surviving member of her immediate family, Pearl was also predeceased by her three brothers, Joseph, Victor and Frank and six sisters, Margaret, Jean, Ruth, Shirley, Louise and Delores.
Pearl Clarke was the best example of a good human. She loved her family to the core. At the tender age of 16, she married her childhood sweetheart, Fred and for 65 years, they loved each other and supported one another. It was true love and a great partnership. Together they had four children who grew up in a positive environment and went on to live good lives.
Pearl supported her husband, Fred in his Oil Burner Service business helping with his bookkeeping, but she also had a career of her own. For 15 years, she worked at London Jewelers as Store Manager. She had an amazing eye and helped many customers find just the right piece.
As much as Pearl loved her job outside the house, she also enjoyed working inside her house. Pearl loved to cook, bake and share her culinary expertise with others, especially her famous fudge squares.
She loved playing Bingo. It wasn’t about winning, as much as playing with her daughters and friends. For Pearl, Bingo was about being together, laughing and having fun with friends. These last couple months, she couldn’t get to Bingo because she was sick and she missed her friends dearly. They brought her joy and she was grateful for their friendship. She was also a supportive member of St. Alban’s Anglican Church, Whitney Pier.
Pearl loved her role as nanny. She greeted her grandchildren with love and every visit was filled with food and hugs.
Pearl Gertrude Clarke lived a life that was dedicated to her family and friends. She touched people with her kindness, affection, and caring and she loved deeply. Hers was a life that mattered and while she may be gone physically – her spirit lives on.
A funeral service and interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit.
