Reginald Paul Roosjen
It is with tremendous sorrow we announce the passing of Reginald Paul Roosjen (went by Paul) at the age of 77 on Thursday, October 27, 2022. Although his passing was unexpected, we take comfort in knowing he was in no pain and past peacefully.
Paul is predeceased by his parents Verna Rose and Paulus Roosjen. He is survived by his wife Cheryl (Marsden) Roosjen; sons Paul (daughter-in-law Leanne) Roosjen, Michael Roosjen; granddaughters Gabrielle McLeod, Oceana Roosjen; sister Catrien (brother-in-law Roel) Vis, sister-in-law Linda Splaine; as well as nephews and nieces Jerry Burke, Gayle Dorey, John Burke, Hugh Jolly, Tabatha Jolly, Trish King.
An amazing father, son, brother, grandfather, and husband. Not only did he recently celebrate his 77th birthday on Monday, October 17th, Paul and Cheryl also recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on Tuesday, October 18, 2022. He enjoyed the simple things in life, yet to him it was what made him the happiest. Working on the weekly lexicon in the Friday newspaper, completing crossword puzzles, watching the Montreal Canadiens win (try to at least), going for his morning and mid-afternoon coffee runs to Tim Horton’s, hitting the open road on his motorcycle eventually purchasing the 1200cc Harley Davidson he had always wanted in life, catching up with friends on the phone, and if you were a family member or friend coming for a visit, you were guaranteed for your first meal to be a Donair. It was what he liked to do, and he enjoyed it.
He was a true Maritimer to the core as well, he was always willing to help others in their time of need. The year he bought his first snow blower, the first big snowstorm he was like a “Kid in a candy store”, out the door he went, and for hours he was out clearing everyone’s driveway in the neighbourhood.
Paul was a member of the Halifax Regional Police Department for approximately 31-years (started in 1966, retired from the force in 1997), his colleagues referred to him as the “Rooster”. During his time on the force, he had the opportunity to work with police canines, the horses you often see at Point Pleasant Park, and he was a member of the Blue Knights motorcycle club.
After retiring from the police department, Paul worked for several bus charters that included Nova Charters, Acadian Lines, DRL, Ambassatours and Trius. He enjoyed showing tourists around the Maritime provinces. There were some groups from overseas who believed Paul was the comedian/actor Rodney Dangerfield.
He may no longer be with us in body, he certainly will be with us in spirit. When you are watching the Montreal Canadiens play, traveling on the open highway on your Harley, or going for your early morning and mid-afternoon coffee runs to Tim Horton’s, it is a guarantee he is right by your side.
