Paul R. Smithkey
1933-2022
The death of Paul Robert Smithkey of Bath and formerly of Kincardine
occurred on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at the Upper River Valley Hospital,
Waterville. Paul was born in Marquette, Michigan on November 29, 1933,
he was the son of the late John and Nellie (Billings) Smithkey. He was
also predeceased by 1 sister, Bobby Rotter, and 2 brothers, Lee and
Rudy Smithkey.
Paul is survived by his 3 daughters, Lanette Virtanen (Michael), Lana
Smithkey (Lori), and Lisa Pickard (Raymond); 2 grandsons, Joshua
Virtanen (Sam) and Nathaniel Pickard; 1 great-grandson, Tristan; his
sister, Amy Peterson; long time companion, Joan Broad as well as
several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Paul Smithkey, a US Navy Veteran, sang with a voice like Willie
Nelson, had a heart as big as Texas, and loved to put a smile on your
face, whether it was with a song or a joke. He began his love of music
at the early age of 12 and taught himself how to play guitar by
watching Gene Autry on the big screen. He played on stages at
fairgrounds, and in taverns and made his way to stages in Maine to
Nashville. He moved his family to Canada where he tried his hand at
farming. He didn’t stay away from music though and still loved a good
jam session anywhere from people’s homes to nursing homes. He made
friends everywhere he went on his many adventures and travels. He
loved his family and will be missed by all.
Respecting Paul’s wishes there will be no visitation or formal
services. For those who wish donations made to the New Brunswick Lung
Association would be appreciated. L.R. Giberson Funeral Directors are
entrusted with the arrangements. www.gibersonfuneraldirectors.ca (506)
