Patsy’s Obituary
With great sadness, the family of the late Patsy High announce her passing at the Canora Gateway Lodge on February 14, 2022, at the age of 70 years.
Patsy was born on November 25, 1951, to Roy and Margaret (Richardson) Johnson in Prince Rupert, BC. Patsy was the middle child of seven children. The family moved to Lasqueti Island and then onto Vancouver Island. They lived on Haliburton Street and then Wellington. Patsy also fondly remembered living on a farm where they grew their own vegetables and her mom’s homemade buns were eaten faster than she could make them. Patsy and her siblings would take the bus to town to attend John Barsby School. She told stories of how she may have misbehaved at times and her books would go down the hallway before her. In school, Patsy loved track and field. She especially enjoyed running.
At the age of 18 years, Patsy gave birth to a baby boy, Henry. She returned to school and graduated in 1971. Two years later, she met then married Robert High. Nine months and two days later, Patsy and Robert welcomed their daughter, Barbara. Patsy greatly enjoyed sewing outfits for Barbara. If she wasn’t sewing, she was knitting or crocheting blankets for everyone around her.
She enjoyed a full and happy home and loved when her children had friends over to do homework. She would eagerly make them a jug of Kool-Aid and cookies to snack on. Her set of Encyclopedias were very helpful with the homework. As well, Patsy especially enjoyed helping the children with their math assignments.
Truly, Patsy appreciated being with children and enjoyed babysitting them all. The ones closest to the family fondly called her ‘Mom.’
In 1977, Patsy became a foster mom to Jason Kemp. She loved spending time with the kids and liked taking them on camping trips. She bravely took eight teenagers camping and proudly declared she loved every minute of it.
In 1994, Patsy was delighted to become a grandmother to Dylan. Together, Patsy and Dylan enjoyed car races and camping. In 2000, she became a grandma a second time to another baby boy, Ian, and in 2002, she excitedly welcomed a granddaughter, Kara.
Shortly after Kara was born, Patsy moved to the Okanagan with Barb and the grandchildren. She enjoyed taking the grandkids on walks along Okanagan Beach or to the water parks. She enjoyed festivals with the children and proudly watched them excel in their extracurricular activities. She truly appreciated spending time with the grandkids and especially loved watching Kara shine in archery. Patsy was very pleased with all her grandchildren’s achievements. She wanted them all to succeed and be the best they can be.
Throughout her life, Patsy became an honourary grandma to many. She was a grandma to Steffie, Carmen, and Lexi Olsen and when she moved to Saskatchewan, she became grandma to Joanne Babb and Ryan Edwards as well.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Patsy was predeceased by her father, Roy Johnson; mother, Margaret Alger; stepdad, George Alger; brothers, Tom, Roy, Irvin, and Larry; and her sister, Marion Gordon.
Left to cherish her memory, Patsy is survived by her son, Henry High; daughter, Barbara High; grandchildren: Ian, Dylan, and Kara High; foster son, Jason Kemp; honourary grandchildren: Steffie, Carmen, and Lexi Olsen, Joanne Babb (Logan Lewis), Ryan Edwards, Rachelle Roach, and Amy Pistone; her sister, Jullie (Marcel) Parissiene; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
In Patsy’s honour, a Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 23, 2022, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Shawna Leson as Certified Celebrant.
