Patrick Edward Crowe
July 5, 2022 (94 years old)
Pat Crowe was born on November 7, 1927 at Park House (Clonlara), County Clare, in the south of Ireland as was his elder sister Emmie, and two younger brothers Dony and Eamon. Their father Daniel Crowe was an auctioneer (who dealt in real estate) and their mother Winnifred Punch was the second youngest of a farm family of seven from Cratloe Castle (near Shannon Airport).
Educated by the Christian Brothers in Limerick, Pat joined the Palestine Police serving in Haifa and Jerusalem on this British / Arab / Jewish force and was on the last British boat to leave the country on May 15, 1948 -the day the State of Israel was declared. He then spent eight years with the London Metropolitan Police.
After visiting Canada House in Trafalgar Square, Pat decided to emigrate, joining the Metallurgical Department of Inco Limited in Sudbury where he remained employed for thirty years, spending time on secondment to Thompson, Manitoba and Sirocco, Indonesia.
Pat and his wife Bernice Haluschak were married in 1966 and have one son Christopher Patrick (partner Keith Clarkson). Pat was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church on Walford Road and a member of the Sudbury Irish Heritage Club and the Sudbury Ukrainian Seniors. He enjoyed annual trips to their winter home in Venice, Florida and travelling across North America, the British Isles and Europe.
Pat was well known by all as a true gentleman, considerate and kind, a dutiful visitor of the sick and bereaved. Hospitable, generous, quick with his wit and wallet, he was simultaneously demonstrative of the best of the Irish while refreshingly unsentimental about his homeland.
He is mourned by the Crowe, Punch and Meskell families in Ireland and by the Haluschak and Matyczuk families in Canada.
In Sudbury, he will be particularly missed by a wide circle of friends and by his niece Geraldine Meskell (husband Ed Kycyk and their daughters Emelia and Julia) and by niece Cheryl Haluschak (husband Roger Parsons) and by nephew Darwin Haluschak.
