Obituary For Patricia “Pat” Anne Dobb (nee Dalgleish)
Patricia “Pat” Anne Dobb died peacefully, on Thursday March 17, 2022, at the Cottage Hospice in Vancouver, BC, with her family by her side, at the age of 85 years.
Pat was born in Grande Prairie, AB, on June 18, 1936, to Allen and Dorcas Dalgleish (nee Macklin) and grew up on a farm southwest of Beaverlodge, AB, at Hazelmere.
As a young girl, Pat enjoyed family gatherings and trips that often included her many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She finished part of her high school by correspondence, while taking courses at Fairview College. She returned to Beaverlodge and worked for several years at Jarvis’s drugstore. While living in Beaverlodge, Pat met Jack Dobb and they married in 1958. After several years in Beaverlodge, they took over the family farm from Allen and Dorcas in 1965.
Together Pat and Jack farmed, ranched, and raised four children. The family moved to Dawson Creek, BC, in 1969, and kept the farm going at Hazelmere. Pat and the family returned to live on the farm in 1975. Pat enjoyed cross-country skiing and being close to her extended family. She remembered the farm life as being quiet, peaceful, and close to nature, but with lots of hard work, feeding hired hands and caring for her babies.
In 1979, Pat and Jack sold the farm and moved back to Dawson Creek. Pat worked for several years as a cashier at Shoppers Drug Mart, and later as a chiropractic receptionist. In the early 1980s, Pat took her great love of children and enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Program at Northern Lights College. Pat thrived as an adult student, sharing her own practical knowledge with her younger classmates. She was voted class valedictorian and after graduation, was employed at the Child Development Centre in Dawson Creek where she rose to a supervisory position. She worked at the Child Development Centre from 1983, until her retirement in 1996.
After her marriage with Jack ended in 1994, Pat travelled and then moved to Richmond, BC, after marrying Keith Cruikshank. She had six wonderful years with Keith before he developed Alzheimer’s. Pat met Denny Hackett in 2002 and they married in 2005. During her years with Denny, Pat enjoyed living close to family on the BC Coast, walking their dogs in the park, and going south in the winter.
Pat was graceful, kind and loved music, dancing and having fun. Throughout her life she brought compassion and empathy to all around her. Children held a special place in her heart, and she gave care and love to the children in her family, those of her many dear friends, and to others who needed her help.
Pat is survived by her husband Denny Hackett; her children: Alice Dobb (Bill Mihalov), Allen (Vivienne) Dobb, Ken (Melody) Dobb, and Cameron Dobb (Megan O’Keefe); grandchildren: Tamara, Koen, Caleb, Natalie, Chrissy, and Trevor; five great-grandchildren; her sister Helen Brown; as well as nieces and nephews: Fred, Linda, Joy, and Paul. She also leaves behind her much-loved uncle Tom, aunts, and cousins from the Macklin and Dalgleish families.
The family wants to recognize the compassion and skill of the staff at the Cottage Hospice in Vancouver.
A Celebration of her Life will be held on, Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 11:30am, at the Beaverlodge United Church (922 4th Ave.).
In lieu of flowers, in-memoriam donations may be made in honour of Pat Dobb to The Bloom Group (391 Powell Street, Vancouver, B.C., V6A 1G5), www.thebloomgroup.org in support of the Cottage Hospice.
