1929-2022
On December 21, 2022, Oscar passed away in Edmonton at the age of 93 years.
Born in Scotfield, Alberta on August 11, 1929 to Linus and Rosetta Meyer. His family moved to Clover Bar (Sherwood Park) in 1944, occupying the northwest corner of Broadmoor Blvd and Baseline Road, where they farmed 480 acres and ran a dairy herd.
As a young man Oscar farmed and later worked as a telegraph operator for CN Rail. Through the years he worked with Texaco, Artificial Breeders, Alberta Fire Services, Driving Instructor and Real Estate Agent. The majority of his career was spent with the Strathcona Fire Department where he started as a volunteer fire fighter and later reached the ranks of Deputy Chief. He later became an instructor and investigator for the Alberta Fire Commissioners office.
A talented athlete he, along with his brother Clair and their team, won a provincial fastball championship (Oscar and Clair combined to pitch a no hitter). He was also an avid hunter and golfer. He and his golf buddies enjoyed great times together.
Oscar met and married Hazel in 1952 and raised their family in Sherwood Park.
Oscar was predeceased by wife Hazel, parents Linus and Rosetta, siblings Francis, Alfred, Gerald, Marie, Eileen, Rita and Clair. He leaves Patricia and family, his children, Ken, Garry, Tim (Daisy) and Lorraine (Gaetan), 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Mabel and brother Lorne as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family wish to convey their gratitude to the caregivers, health professionals, Alberta Health Services team, doctors and nurses who helped care for Oscar over the last number of years.
A private family service was held.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Oscar was a friend of us on the Broadmoor Golf Course. He was a true gentleman who loved golfing and visiting. He had so many life experiences which we heard about. We sure enjoyed our time together. Your friends, Anne and Wayne Malkewich
