Luciw, Olive Louise (NEE McGill) October 2, 1929 – June 25, 2022
On Saturday, June 25, Ollie went home on the wings of angels. She is survived by her children: Paula, Kathy, Geoff; grandchildren: Michael, Soheila, Jordan; and great-grandchildren: Vanessa and Avery. Ollie was predeceased by her parents: Wesley, Edna; siblings: Emily, Mert, George, James, Flossie; and husband, Donald.
Ollie was born to Wesley and Edna McGill, in Regina, Sask. on Oct. 2, 1929. She was a child of the Depression years which engrained in her the importance of hard work and frugality. While still in her teens, Ollie’s mother passed away, leaving her to care for an ailing father and work part-time after school. While working at Heintzman’s Music in Regina, she met Donald Luciw, her husband of 44 years. They had three children in Regina before heading west to Calgary, Banff, and finally Kelowna in 1966.
Ollie worked downtown at Haworth’s Jewelry, then later at Mildred’s Dress Shop. She found her true calling though, as a library assistant at A.S. Matheson Elementary School where she touched the lives of many children. After retirement and with the arrival of grandchildren, Ollie became Nana and Donnie became Papa, roles they cherished.
From baseball and science fairs to swim team and odyssey of the mind Nana and Papa enthusiastically supported their grandkids. And when they weren’t with the kids, they were enjoying the bounty of the Okanagan Valley, working hard to preserve whatever was in season, with much of it coming from their garden on Laurier Ave.
After Papa passed away in 2005, it was time to downsize and leave the gardening to others. Nana lived quite comfortably for several of years at Lakeshore Place and then her last year was spent with the caring staff at 3Links Manor. We cannot speak highly enough of their gentle and thoughtful treatment of the residents under their care.
There is so much more that can be said and will be said about our dear, dear Mother, our little bird, our little spark, Rest in Peace. You are LOVED!
