Obituary
Lord now you are letting your servant depart in peace according to your word. – Luke 2:29
What Odino longed to see on Earth, he now sees in full. Odino Soligo passed away peacefully with family by his side at his home in Thornhill, Ontario on February 6th, 2022, at the age of 100.
Beloved husband, pre-deceased by his beautiful wife Eugenia, devoted father of Maurice (Rachele), Michael (Jeanine) and Magda (Ron). Cherished Nonno of Robin (Patrick), Gobinde (Ali), Ram Das (Alison), Sara (Matt), Jessica, Gabriel, Jonathan and Michael. Bis-Nonno to Miles, Jackson, Sam, Chiara, Maddalena, Arlo and Luca. Pre-deceased by siblings Egidio, Savina, Elda, Narcisso, Madre Quintilla, Don Ernesto, Dario, Odetta, Mario, and survived by his brother Decimo and brother-in-law Bruno (Lydia). Odino’s extended family, nieces and nephews all over the world and the Sorelle Apostole della Consolata held a special place in his heart.
Odino was born in Trevignano on March 24, 1921, to Riccardo and Clotilde Soligo. At the age of 21 he became a pilot in the Italian Air Force during World War II. A fantastic pilot, he survived being a prisoner of war in North Africa and returned to Italy at the end of the war to rejoin his father and work in the family construction business. During his daily travels to and from the job site by train he meant the love of his life Eugenia. They were married in October of 1947 and seeking opportunities to provide for his family he emigrated to Canada.
In 1951, Odino started DMS Masonry with his partners Carlo De Biasio and Mario Michelin, later to be joined by Frank Camisso. DMS grew to become one of the top 5 masonry contractors in the GTA. Over the years, Odino’s business interests would expand into the industrial property sector. He could often be found at the office well into his nineties.
At the young age of 65 on a beach in Florida, inspired by the people running along the sand, he decided to take up running. He continued to run marathons and ultra-marathons all over the world well into his 80s establishing numerous North American and World records in his age category.
Odino was a passionate gardener; he is especially famous for his tomatoes. From radicchio, to lettuce, to cucumbers and more, his fantastic produce kept his family and friends well stocked. Odino was an avid soccer fan, fantastic 5-pin bowler and he loved to keep up on current events. He never missed his early evening TV episode of L’eredita.
Odino loved his family. He was an inspirational example of a parent who safe-guarded his family as well as being a role model to many. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were extremely special to him. He loved to see them smile and spend time with them. From trips to Florida, to Baffin Island, to Italy, to summer afternoons sharing stories, he always took great interest and pride in their lives.
When our beloved Eugenia took ill, God presented our family with our own guardian angel who would tenderly and lovingly care for her. Emely has become a fixture within our family. After Eugenia passed Emely remained with Odino, bringing him comfort and care until the very end.
His faith was a cornerstone of his daily existence and towards the end of his life he could often be heard asking, “Do you know where you’re going?” We know where he is.
We love you Dad, Nonno, Bis-Nonno. You ran the race well.
Our family would like to acknowledge the extraordinary care Odino received at the Heart
Function Clinic at MacKenzie Health as well as from Dr. Lydia Cheung and Dr. Paul Chong.
Recipient of the following awards:
Croce e la Medaglia d’Argento al valore milltare Ontario Senior Achievement Award, 2005 Premio Eccellenze Venete Nel Mondo, 2018
I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. Now waiting for me is the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day—and not only to me, but to all those who have eagerly longed for his appearance.”
– 2 Timothy 4:7-8
