With Norma’s death on February 9, 2022, our world is a little less beautiful, the skies a little less blue, and the scent of roses forever diminished. Norma was simply put, the kindest and most remarkable person we had the privilege to love; she was easy to love; one couldn’t help but fall in love with her.
Norma was born on October 2, 1932, in Hansworth, Saskatchewan, but lived most of her life in Nelson, BC. Some of her many interests and passions included: sewing, knitting, gardening, quilting, and beating anyone who challenged her at Scrabble. Her greatest passion for many years was designing and creating costumes for theatre productions in Nelson at NDU and later at DTUC. At this, Norma was creative and brilliant. She could turn any simple piece of fabric into a beautiful costume with her magic. Anyone who knew Norma and wants to honour her or pay tribute to her, might want head to the Capitial Theatre and take a tour of the Norma Vecchio Costume Shop where many of her magnificent creations still hang today.
Norma’s husband Mike died in 1986 and her daughter Becky died in 2004. Norma was the matriarch of the Vecchio clan and we all relied on her intelligent counsel, wisdom, know-how, advice that was never wrong, no-nonsense grit, and her limitless abundance of love and kindness for each of us.
Norma leaves 5 children, 13 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren to keep her memory alive. She was the joy of our lives and our rock; we will miss her fiercely. Just before she died, she told us to take care of each other and that she “would forever be with us everywhere”.
We will carry her with us as we learn to live without her. We feel such deep and holy gratitude for the laughter and tears shared, the stories told over the years, the tens of thousands of meals shared (and mostly cooked by her) and for the opportunity to have a mother who made each of us feel like the favourite child. There is no mother better than Norma and we will miss her every single day. It was a privilege to be one of her children.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Mieske, the third-floor nursing staff, and the community health workers.
A family celebration is planned for the spring. Donations can be made to the SPCA in lieu of flowers.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Norma Vecchio Burdett October 2 1932
