Obituary
MATHEWS, Nora Christina
1939 – 2022
Nora Christina Mathews passed away after a short battle with her health in the Coronation Hospital on July 15th, 2022 at the age of 83 years. Nora was born April 4th, 1939 in India to parents, A.D. and Ferganda Mathews. She was raised alongside her six brothers and three sisters in India. Nora was a brave young lady, displayed when she left home for England where she nursed for 10 years and then displayed again when she took a larger leap and came to Coronation, Alberta, Canada at the age of 32 years. Coronation is where Nora would remain, working and serving the community through her many years as a Registered Nurse. It was Nora’s nursing career that would keep revealing how brave and courageous she was; there were many times Nora would be quick to respond to an emergency without hesitation.
Living in Coronation meant traveling the rural Albertan highways to pick up amenities and spend time with her extended family when she could. She always cherished her Indian roots and had so much pride in the sharing of her family’s story, her history, and delighted in preparing and sharing the culinary delights that are traditional to India. Nora was a self-taught cook with a real gift for making it tasty and perfect in texture without any recipes to follow. Nora was a great cook and enjoyed spending time outdoors growing flowers, gardening, and feeding birds. Except magpies, they would steal all the food and send the little, sweeter birds fleeing, if Nora could have kept them away, she most certainly would have. Nora also enjoyed watching Blue Jays baseball, hosting tea, all the times with her beloved girlfriends, and fancy cars. Nora was petite in stature but robust in personality and will be dearly missed by family and friends alike.
Nora will be lovingly remembered by her brother, Lawrence; brother in-law, Reverend David Manuel; sister’s in-law, and all her nieces and nephews in Canada, USA, and India. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to Coronation Evangelical Free Church, Box 160, Coronation, Alberta, 403-578-3884, efccoronation@gmail.com.
Visitation time for friends and community will be available for one hour before the Funeral Service commences. A funeral service will held at the Coronation Evangelical Free Church, 5009 Albert Street, Coronation, Alberta on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Clayton Grice officiating. Burial will follow at Coronation Cemetery, Coronation, Alberta. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.coronationfuneralhome.ca.
