Obituary for
Nick Andrew Makowecki
It is with heavy hearts we announce that Nick Andrew Makowecki passed away on February 9, 2022 at the age of 78 years. Nick was a husband, father and grandfather, he was also a man with many interests and talents. He grew up on the family farm near Redwater with his dad, mom and brothers and sisters. He attended Vermillion College, studying agriculture and playing football. He worked in the hospitality industry in a variety of roles in several places such as Whitecourt, Inuvik and Fox Creek. He also worked in the trucking industry driving gravel trucks, cement trucks, high boys and then finally as a picker operator. His love for football was a lifelong passion, he cheered the Edmonton Eskimos and took great pride in watching his grandson on the field. Nick was also a coach for his children’s activities growing up, coaching t-ball and softball as well as being there for their various Ukrainian dancing events with his camera in hand. His support for extracurricular activities continued with his grandchildren, he was often in the stands for their hockey games, dance recitals and football games. In his later years, he could often be found outside, tinkering with woodworking projects, making leather wallets and gardening. Nick took immense pride and calculation in growing pumpkins to enter into the Smoky Lake Pumpkin Festival.
Survived by his wife, Sheila; his children, Melanie (Micheal), Daniel (Sandy) and Raegan (Joseph); grandchildren, Ty, Eva, Faith, Zayn and William.
Nick is also survived by his two brothers, Adrian (Janice) Makowecki and Boris (Cheryl) Makowecki; two sisters, Natalka (Mike) Chekerda and Lil (Gordon) Koshman; plus numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents, Fred and Mary Makowecki, and faithful companions, Spud, Missy and Buddy.
Funeral Service to be held on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. at Sts. Borys and Hlib Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Redwater, Alberta. Father Tarasenko officiating with interment to follow at Cookville Cemetery.
