NEWTON, Sharon Rosalie (née McBride)
October 23, 1939 — October 13, 2022
It is with sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Sharon Newton on October 13, 2022 with family and friends at her side. Sharon is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Nicole, and son-in-law, Alan McAndrew; her grandson, Euan; her brother Mike; nephew, Bert (Julie), and her great-nieces/nephew Alanya, Stephanie, & Martin; her niece, Gail McBride (Behrooz); and her other extended family members Cathy Hermiston, Alan Burdock, & Greg Burdock; as well as her special friends Craig (Alison) Reigh and their family. There are many wonderful friends that Sharon held close to her heart, too many to mention. Sadly, in 2015, Sharon lost her husband of 48 years, Bill, who was her one and only. Sharon was preceded in death by her oldest brother, Hanford, & sister-in-law, Ruth who was like a true sister to her.
Sharon grew up on the West Coast in a pioneer family that were involved in fishing and farming. The McBride name can still be seen around the lower mainland and the Sharon M. fishing vessel still exists on the Pacific.
In 1957, after graduating from Semiahmoo Highschool in Whiterock, Sharon jumped at the chance to become a RN and train at the Vancouver General Hospital. There, she made the most of her time, not only learning but having fun and meeting new friends that would become lifelong pals. She was asked to speak on behalf of the Graduating Class of 1961 at their 50th Reunion, which showed how much Sharon meant to her colleagues and peers. Penticton General Hospital was where Sharon started and ended her nursing career. She was known as “living history” around the hospital and she never stopped learning. In 1963, while working at the hospital, Sharon learned how to sail and drove her sports car towing a boat behind to Virginia and North Carolina to participate in the World Jolly Boat Championships. In 1991, she graduated from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. At graduation, she was awarded a gold medal for her nursing and academic excellence. Hemodialysis and kidney transplant was her next passion to learn about and at age 60 she was granted a Canadian Certification of Nephrology Nursing and took on the role of Transplant Clinic Coordinator.
Retiring at age 65, Sharon next wanted to learn about the world of art and was quickly confirmed as a member of Federation of Canadian Artists. Sharon was very involved in the local Naramata Arts Studio and enjoyed her outings with her painting girls. In her later years, she loved to travel with family and friends. Her highlights were travelling to Disneyland with her grandson. She also took a tour to Spain and Italy that she went on with her high school classmate, Rosie. Sharon had so many other passions and skills. She was a lover of animals; big and small. As well she was a fantastic cook and host, canning and making delicious jams and pies from her garden. She enjoyed sewing and making flower arrangements, and skiing at Apex into her seventies. Sharon was a great reader, scramble player and crossword wizard. She was a sailor both on the ice and in the water, and, above all, she was an outstanding wife, mother, and gramma. These are the many things her friends and family will remember her for.
Nicole would like to thank the nursing staff at the Vineyards Residence who often referred to her mom as their favourite. A special thanks also goes out to CarryAnne who was Sharon’s special caregiver and partner in crime.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Society of BC,.
A Celebration of Life will be held on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2022, at 11:00 AM, at PENTICTON LAKESIDE RESORT, 21 Lakeshore Dr W, Penticton, BC.
