It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nancy Lorraine MacDonald, 67, of Northside East Bay, on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, after a short, but hard fought battle with cancer.
Nancy was born in Sydney on January 30, 1955. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Rodgers) Wolodka.
Nancy is survived by her husband of 34 years, Wayne and daughters, Jacqueline and Katie, as well as sisters, Sheila (Gerald), Myrna, Joannie (Matthew) and Marjorie, all of Sydney; her brother, Paul (Diane),Calgary; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Nancy was a member of Trinity United Church in Whitney Pier.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, James Wolodka and also by her much beloved and spoiled canine friend, Pixie, who was by her side for 17 years.
If you are from the Pier you may know our mother as one of the “Wolodka girls with the long hair” or Nancy who worked at Pat’s Burger. She always spoke fondly about her years working at Reeves Building Supplies, Internav, and Mason’s Wholesalers. After having her daughters, Nancy became a homemaker and was the most loving and nurturing mother. She was very committed to instilling compassion and kindness in her girls. After getting back into the workforce as a cashier at Wal-Mart Sydney River and a bus aide with the school board, she retired in 2011.
Nancy loved visiting Ingonish in the summer and staying at the bungalow. She believed the beach and a good book or a Sudoku puzzle out on the patio was the best way to relax and recharge.
During the many months of Nancy’s illness, she was thankful to have her family nearby, especially her husband who was so dedicated to her care.
Thank you to all the VON nurses who took care of Nancy, especially Melissa, who she trusted and appreciated so very much.
A funeral service will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Emily Duggan officiating.
Memorials in her name may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Center.
