GUNNING: Myrtle Elizabeth (Bowers)
October 13, 1925 – January 19, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our mother, Myrtle Elizabeth (Bowers) Gunning, on January 19th at Moira Place, with family by her side. Predeceased by her parents, Charles Bowers and Hannah (Roote) Bowers, husband Lorne Irvine Gunning, infant son Garry Lorne, and husband Donald Palmateer, brother Lorne Bowers and sister, Dorothy Fisher. Beloved mother of Jim (Jacie), Lynda Akey (Gary), Dianne Spencer (Murray), Lorna Fratschko (Erich) and John (Gaylene). Nana was loved by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She and her husband Lorne established Farnsworth Farms and operated the dairy farm on Crookston Road for many decades. Devoted to her family, she worked tirelessly to support them as well as others in the community, through her work as a member of the UCW, the Rebekah Lodge, and the Women’s Institute, and as a volunteer with the Salvation Army. Mom was a lifelong member of St. John’s United Church in Tweed, where she served as Treasurer for several years.
The family will receive friends at the McConnell Funeral Home, 137 Colborne St. Tweed by appointment only on Tuesday January 25, from 1-4 and 6-8 pm. Please phone the funeral home at 613-478-3535 OR 613-968-5588 between the hours of 9 and 5 pm for reservation. A private funeral service will be held at St. John’s United Church on Wednesday January 26, at 11 am. A live stream of the service will be available on-line and a link will be provided on this website closer to Wednesday.—Spring Interment in Victoria Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made (sorry no cash) to St. John’s United Church; Gateway Community Health Centre (for programs); the Salvation Army, or to Moira Place Benevolent Fund.
