Obituary
Muriel Marjorie Ward (nee Gawne) passed away peacefully at home September 23rd , 2022 due to complications from Pancreatic Cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, Mac in 1975 and Marjorie in 2018, her husband Doug, four sons Cliff, Ryan and Rodney Roussel, and Bradley Ward as well as her sister, Deanna. She is survived by her sister Jamie, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, special aunt Goldie Gawne, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Born in Penticton’s “old hospital” (now Haven Hill), Muriel grew up in Naramata on the orchard property at the top of Gawne Road where her grandparents, Jim and Edith Gawne first settled in 1921. She attended Naramata Elementary at a time when at every stop between Gawne Road and Debeck, the school bus picked up cousins : Munros, Littlejohns, Workmans, McPhees and more Gawnes, joined by the Wisemans who lived in the village. Christmas Concerts and Mayday celebrations were the highlights of those years. Going on to Pen High (more years of bus riding) meant new experiences and friends. Muriel was part of the Class of 1958, a group that continues to gather for reunions after sixty years!
Working at Super Value during high school provided a good grounding in retail and the pleasure of helping establish their garden shop. After moving to Vancouver and starting a family, her main interests were homemaking, gardening and sewing. Returning to Penticton, Muriel spent several years with Safeway’s Bakery Department making lasting friendships while indulging her love of baking. She also joined the Garden Club with their home on Paris Street; winning the Best Spring Garden award.
Relocating to Victoria and working with Sawyers Sewing inspired Muriel to open her own business. She proudly owned and operated Muriel’s Sew and Serge from 1992 to 2007, selling Husqvarna machines, teaching sewing skills and enjoying opportunities for extensive world wide travel. She was proud to have her team win Best Dealer Award and recognition for creativity, marketing and instruction.
Retirement meant a return to Penticton with more time for family, friends, hobbies and travel. Muriel nurtured their spacious garden on Penticton Ave. Into a beautiful haven. She also followed her Mother’s example in volunteering at the Care Closet for several years, using her skills to assist in fundraising for Penticton Regional Hospital.
Muriel was proud of her heritage from two pioneer families, the Gawnes of Naramata and Overtons of Keremeos/Cawston. Both valued a strong work ethic and concern for the community. She will be missed and fondly remembered for enthusiasm and efficiency, her humor, fun gifts, awesome Scrabble skills and strength to deal with adversities and move on to new challenges.
No service as per Muriel’s request; rather enjoy a drink and toast to your happiest time spent with Muriel. In Lieu of flowers please make donations to the Penticton Care Closet.
A special thank you to Dr. Bannerman for his kindness, honesty and compassion, as well as a thank you to Dr. Clark and to all other doctor’s, nurses and surgeon’s that assisted Muriel.
