Muriel was born on June 26, 1938, and departed peacefully on February 16, 2022, surrounded by family.
Muriel grew up in Calgary and met the love of her life, Bill Gillott in 1952 when she began working at West Canadian Microfilm. Four years later they would marry and begin their 65 year romance. Muriel was passionate about her family and together with Bill raised five children instilling a set of values and beliefs that enabled them to succeed. Muriel believed community involvement enriched the lives of everyone, volunteering with numerous organizations throughout her life. She spent many years as a Rotary Ann championing the Stay in School and Polio Plus programs, impacting lives near and far. In 1994, she was awarded the Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow Award. Muriel supported the Arts in Calgary and was a founder at the Calgary Center for the Performing Arts. As a Calgarian, she knew the cultural value of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede and volunteered as a member of the International Photo Salon committee for 38 years. Not afraid to “break a leg” Muriel performed as a dancer in the Downtown Rotary Club Show for 27 years.
Muriel is survived by her husband the love of her life, Bill; children, Patricia Graham, Debra (Brian) Heald , Nancy Gillott, Susan Merritt (Ian Hudson), and Grant (Jaye) Gillott; her grandchildren Craig, Jill, Roger, Caroline, Taylor, Pamela, Hayden, Lyle, Alissa, Ashley, Matthew, Bobby, Sydney, Brooklyn, and Cameron; 10 great grandchildren; her brothers Bill (Yvonne) Hayden and Ken (Judy) Hayden; sisters Ruth Lloyd, Lorna Gordon, and Donna Hill; and a large extended family. Muriel was predeceased by her granddaughter Alana and sisters Gail and Eva.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at McInnis and Holloway Funeral Home (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary) at 3:00pm with a reception to follow.
