“If I hadn’t been a doctor, I would have been a lawyer, a pilot, or a cargo ship captain.” These were the musings we heard from our father, Nelson Mitchell who passed away at home on September 11 at the age of 88.
Nelson Mitchell, son of Muriel and Nelson Michell grew up the oldest of three and attended Granby High School, Bishop’s College School and ultimately McGill University. Dad was an orthopedic surgeon at the Royal Victoria Hospital, held various leadership positions in his field and was active in arthritis research in Canada at the Shriners Hospital. He ended his 50 year career at McGill as Associate Dean of Medical School Admissions and Professor Emeritus.
Along the way Dad pursued many hobbies and interests including aviation – a passion he passed on to his son and two grandsons. In his retirement, Dad served as an expert medical-legal witness and staffed clinics around Montreal. He further became active with the Wales Home Residence and Long Term Care Facility. He loved captaining his yacht Finisterre with family and friends aboard through the Thousand Islands and across Lake Ontario. But mostly, he loved us – his family and friends. We can all recall fun summers at our Ingleside cottage or legendary dinner parties in Montreal. He took us on exotic trips to Europe which saw us wearing dinner jackets and ball gowns – a novelty for all.
He has left an indelible mark on his children and grandchildren of whom he was so proud as evidenced by the myriad pictures around his home. Always in our hearts: children Andrew Mitchell and Heather (Mike) Weaver and grandchildren Grant, Katherine, Nelson Colin, Nicole and Jillian, Sisters Jean (Ray) Goodier and Margaret Anderson.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Old Brewery Mission (missionoldbrewery.ca) or Sun Youth (both favorite charities of his) or to a cause of your choice would be appreciated. A celebration of life will take place on October 15, 2022 at 2pm at Kane Fetterly Funeral Home, 5301 Decarie Blvd, Montreal, Quebec.
